IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued by some people that the lifestyle can be improved by having useful scientific aims. Although some people might disagree with the statement, but I completely agree, not only because of improvement in healthcare and education but also for transportation.
There are multiple benefits associated with having goals in science. Firstly, improvement in healthcare facilities is a major benefit to having science goals. As scientific innovation can improve medical services. Take an example of Japan, where maximum human operations have been performed by robots since 2022, mainly because of advancements in medicine through scientific research. Thus, people should have an important goal about science.
Secondly, advancement in education is another major benefit from scientific goals. As science can improve education through digitalization in society and educational centers. For instance, in China, it is expected that by the year 2035, all of educational institutes will be converted to digital books, and there will be no need for physical text books, and also as everyone knows, e-books are easy to access anywhere and anytime. Hence, it is proved that having some important goal about science can be beneficial.
Finally, the transportation industry can benefit through systematic learning. As scientists can improve the infrastructure of roads and vehicles improvement through research.
To sum up, I believe that lifestyle can be improved through scientific learning. Not only because of improvements in the healthcare industry and new developments in education, but also because of the transport sector will improve through science learning.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of science improving lives. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. While you provide examples like robotics in Japan and digitalization in China, the link between these examples and the core argument—that science's 'most important aim' should be improving lives—is not fully explored. The essay tends to list benefits rather than critically discussing the extent of the statement. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting points directly address the 'most important aim' aspect by comparing it to other potential scientific goals, such as pure discovery or commercial profit.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the argument. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Finally' to signal transitions. However, the use of these markers is somewhat mechanical. Additionally, some sentences are disjointed; for example, the second sentence in the introduction uses 'Although... but', which is grammatically incorrect and creates a clunky transition. To improve, try to use a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensure that the logical flow between sentences is smoother, rather than relying solely on list-like transitions.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. You use repetitive phrasing, such as 'improvement in' and 'scientific goals', which limits the sophistication of your writing. Some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'maximum human operations' when referring to robotic surgery. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and a broader range of academic vocabulary. For instance, instead of repeating 'improvement', use synonyms like 'advancement', 'enhancement', or 'progress' to demonstrate a more flexible command of the language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. For example, the sentence 'Although some people might disagree with the statement, but I completely agree' contains a redundant conjunction. There are also issues with article usage and pluralization, such as 'all of educational institutes' and 'vehicles improvement'. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and the correct use of subordinating conjunctions.
