IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The most valuable goal of science is to help improve people's lives. I strongly agree with this statement because with insightful research, people can find cure to different illnesses and they can provide information on how to stay healthy.

I believe that with the study of science, researchers can now conduct experiments to identify the possible cure to certain diseases. A great progress in the study was the discovery of chemotherapy. People who were diagnosed with cancer can now undergo chemotherapy to remove the cancer cells in their bodies. Unlike before, when you were diagnosed with chronic illness, the survival rate is very low. Now, with the help of these procedures, the survival rate is slowly increasing. This definitely improves the patient's life as it gives them hope for the future.

Another way science can help improve people's lives is by providing useful information about health and how certain products can negatively impact our bodies. For example, smoking cigarettes have been known to cause lung cancer. Knowing this information will help people avoid smoking cigarettes to reduce the risk of having lung cancer in the future. Another example is how physical activities can help improve our overall health. Since people are aware of the benefits of physical activities, they are encouraged to do this more often.

In conclusion, I definitely agree that the most important goal of science must be to improve the lives of the people. This is because the results of the research made and the information gathered are all helpful to the people not only in the present but also in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt clearly, maintaining a consistent position throughout. The arguments regarding medical advancements and health education are relevant and supported with examples like chemotherapy and the dangers of smoking. However, the development is somewhat limited; the essay focuses almost exclusively on medical science. To reach a higher band, you should consider a broader interpretation of 'science' or acknowledge potential counter-arguments to demonstrate a more nuanced understanding. The conclusion effectively summarizes your stance, but the overall depth of the analysis is slightly restricted, keeping it within the Band 6.5 to 7.0 range.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Another way', 'For example', and 'In conclusion' effectively. However, the transitions between sentences are sometimes a bit mechanical. To improve, try to use more sophisticated linking phrases or vary your sentence structure to create a smoother flow between ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'insightful research', 'chronic illness', and 'survival rate' are used appropriately. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive and lacks the precision or 'less common' lexical items required for higher bands. For instance, you use 'improve' and 'help' multiple times. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms and collocations, such as 'alleviate suffering' or 'mitigate risks', to show a greater command of academic English and avoid redundant phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most sentences are clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'smoking cigarettes have been known' (should be 'has') and 'find cure' (should be 'find a cure'). Additionally, there are minor issues with article usage and pluralization. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, and try to incorporate more complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, with greater precision.
