IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Science plays a vital role in our lives today. And the very most important and powerful aim to improve people’s living standards and lives.
I believe without technicalities and lack of knowledge about science our society will collapse. Even normal human life will be miserable. I agree that science should improve people lives but on the other hand science and scientists only give us the benefits for specific things but we as a human has to use the technology and it’s techniques to create more efficient ways to ease our daily life and improve our hectic life cycle.
Whereas, it is not science solely who have to work only or improve our lives. It is our own duty to improve the conditions under the circumstances facing our country.
Science can’t create Solace when human is spent.
Human only has the ability to make things better when they are not in the right hands.
Science can make things easier but what if we don’t have enough data or knowledge to use the science in a meaningful and practical way. Science only be productive when we have the information to do things better. Science already have done so much but we are neglecting the fact that everything cannot be served on a plate we have to make effort to get the best out of everything. No one has tied our hands to use the science.
In the end , I concluded that science alone cannot make the people life perfect. It shoud improve human life but without the help of human and the society scientists and science experts cannot do anything.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the role of science, but the position is not consistently clear or well-developed. While you agree that science should improve lives, the argument becomes somewhat repetitive and lacks specific, concrete examples to support your claims. The ideas regarding human responsibility are relevant but remain abstract. To improve, ensure each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the argument and provides clear evidence or logical progression to support your stance. The conclusion is present but does not fully synthesize the points made, leading to a somewhat underdeveloped argument overall.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical flow between sentences is often disjointed. Transitions are frequently missing or used incorrectly, such as the abrupt start of the second paragraph and the misuse of 'Whereas' at the beginning of the third paragraph. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow your line of reasoning. To improve, use a wider range of cohesive devices (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in contrast') to link your ideas more effectively and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that guides the reader through your argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally basic and repetitive. You rely on simple phrasing, such as 'improve people's lives' and 'make things better', which limits the sophistication of your writing. There are also some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'Science can’t create Solace when human is spent' and 'everything cannot be served on a plate'. To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more precise, academic vocabulary and demonstrate a better understanding of word formation and collocation. Avoid informal or overly simplistic expressions to maintain an appropriate academic tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('science only be productive', 'science already have done'), missing articles, and sentence fragments. The sentence structures are predominantly simple, with limited attempts at complex sentences. When complex structures are attempted, they often contain errors that impede clarity. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, particularly subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Once these are consistent, work on integrating a variety of complex structures, such as relative clauses or conditional sentences, to demonstrate a wider grammatical range.
