IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
I strongly agree that the main purpose of science should be to improve people’s lives. Science makes many aspects of everyday life easier and more efficient. In addition, it directly improves people’s well-being by increasing both life expectancy and quality of life.
First of all, science has significantly transformed people’s everyday lives. For modern society, it is almost impossible to imagine life without the Internet, electricity, cars and other scientific achievements. By using these technologies, people can save time for more meaningful activities, such as spending time with their families, learning new skills or pursuing other activities that are valuable for them. For example, the introduction of AI has helped many workers optimize their work routines by automating tasks such as planning, basic calculations and report writing.
Secondly, scientific progress has increased both life expectancy and people’s quality of life. Scientific research has led to the development of numerous medicines and treatments for diseases that were once considered incurable. Many infectious diseases can now be prevented or treated effectively, while some forms of cancer can be detected and treated at an early stage. Furthermore, scientists have developed methods of identifying diseases before severe symptoms appear. For example, the development and widespread use of vaccines in the 20th century helped significantly reduce mortality rates in many countries.
In conclusion, scientific research improves people’s lives in numerous ways. It extends life expectancy, reduces the risk of fatal diseases and makes everyday life easier and more efficient. These benefits clearly justify continued scientific development.

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response clearly addresses the prompt and maintains a consistent position throughout. The arguments are relevant and well-supported with examples, such as the mention of AI in the workplace and the impact of vaccines on mortality rates. The ideas are extended logically, providing a clear rationale for the importance of science in modern life. To reach a higher band, the essay could benefit from acknowledging the counter-argument—that science might have other aims, such as pure discovery or military advancement—before refuting it, which would demonstrate a more nuanced and balanced approach to the 'to what extent' aspect of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and the progression of ideas is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'First of all', 'Secondly', and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is easy to follow. The flow of information is logical, and the reader is guided clearly through the writer's argument without any confusion or mechanical repetition.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for the academic context. The student uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'scientific achievements', 'optimize their work routines', 'life expectancy', and 'mortality rates'. While the vocabulary is sufficient and precise, it lacks the 'less common' or 'sophisticated' lexical items that would distinguish a higher band. The word choices are natural and collocation is generally sound, with no errors that impede communication. To improve, the student could incorporate more nuanced academic collocations or idiomatic expressions to demonstrate a wider, more flexible range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a good control of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly throughout. The student successfully employs complex structures, such as 'By using these technologies, people can save time...' and 'Scientific research has led to the development of numerous medicines...'. While the grammar is accurate, the range of structures is somewhat standard. To achieve a higher score, the student could experiment with more varied sentence types, such as inversion or more sophisticated conditional clauses, to show greater flexibility.
