Student answer (Band 5.5)
In contemporary society, a large proportion of individuals believe that the most significant area of science research should be that how to improve individual's lives. In today's world humans have to experience various diseases such as obesity and diabetes, furthermore a large group of people believe that science should also be focused on climatic events, like increase in the air quality index, as it has direct impact on human's lives. I completely agree with this view and in this essay I will explain my opinion with examples.
One of the most compelling arguments is that researchers should be more into disease research such as metabolic diseases. These diseases are now become more common in the modern society. For example, in the Florida, USA metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes has became very common disease among children and adults. Science must focus on controlling these diseases and should also introduce such medications that will instantly cure disease. Such research ultimately enhance people's lives and they will be able to live a health life.
Another important thing which has direct influence on people's everyday life is the negative environmental changes. Scientists must pay attention on the climate change events, such as increase in world's temperature due to depletion of ozone layer and change in the air quality index (AQI) due to surge in industrialization. Individual lives effected by these environmental changes. Therefore, scientists make sure that extensive research must be conducted in these areas, and problem must be overcome to make human lives better.
In conclusion, although it is the common thought of people that science must take further steps to make humans lives better. I believe, researcher should focus on controlling the spread of dangerous diseases by introducing environmental friendly techniques. My view is that the main responsibility for solving
the problem lies with every citizen and the government.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position and providing relevant arguments regarding disease research and environmental protection. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the mention of Florida as an example of metabolic diseases is a bit specific but lacks a clear connection to how science specifically solves these issues beyond general statements. The conclusion introduces a new, slightly contradictory point about 'environmental friendly techniques' and government responsibility, which was not fully explored in the body paragraphs. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explained with a logical link back to the main thesis.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'One of the most compelling arguments' and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'Another important thing which has direct influence'. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the final paragraph where the link between the conclusion and the preceding arguments feels disjointed. Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer to their antecedents would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at using topic-specific vocabulary like 'metabolic diseases', 'depletion of ozone layer', and 'industrialization'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'live a health life' (should be 'healthy life') and 'Individual lives effected' (should be 'affected'). The range is sufficient to communicate the message, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Expanding the use of collocations and more sophisticated academic vocabulary would be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('diseases has became', 'problem must be overcome'), missing articles ('in the Florida'), and awkward phrasing ('researchers should be more into disease research'). These errors are noticeable and occur regularly, though they do not typically impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring consistent use of articles and verb tenses.
