The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is common fact that the primary goal of science should be to improve the lives of people. I personally agree with this view as in contemporary world, improvements are needed. I would discuss further reasons for this in the following essay.
To begin with, the most necessary aim of science must be to improve people's lives. Firstly, in modern times, there are a lot of new threats to humanity such as diseases like cancer, diabetes, etc. For instance, although there are treatment measures for cancer and diabetes, there are no permanent solutions for these. Furthermore, technology has been constantly developing since quiet a few years, these modifications must be concentrated more on making all the major sicknesses disappear by rightful solutions.
On the other hand, there is still a major proportion of weakly developed and underserved countries. Related measures could be taken to find a way in providing them. For example, with discovery alternative food resources, the hunger issue in these countries could be solved. Moreover, many nations still lack water and energy supply in which water is a basic necessity for survival of human beings. As a result, there is an immediate need to stop these from happening. In addition, practices like making cheaper and efficient means of sources that provide electricity and water could help our society significantly.
In conclusion, I firmly agree with the opinion that the main aim of science should be making a persons life easier. There are a variety of diseases that are globally harmful and needs immediate solutions. Similarly, several countries lack adequate resources that are required to stay alive. Ultimately, this requires an urgent plan and action.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of science focusing on improving human lives. The ideas are relevant, focusing on medical advancements and addressing basic needs like food and energy in underserved regions. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the discussion on 'weakly developed' countries is a bit general and could have been strengthened with more specific examples or a deeper exploration of how science specifically facilitates these improvements. While the position is consistent, the supporting arguments lack the depth required for a higher band, as they remain somewhat superficial in their analysis of the complex relationship between scientific research and societal welfare.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'Furthermore,' and 'On the other hand' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'Related measures could be taken to find a way in providing them.' While the progression of ideas is generally clear, the referencing is sometimes imprecise, which slightly hinders the overall flow. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the essay follows a standard structure that is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at using less common vocabulary, such as 'contemporary world' and 'underserved,' but the range is somewhat limited. Some word choices are slightly unnatural or imprecise, such as 'quiet a few years' (instead of 'quite') and 'rightful solutions.' Additionally, there is some repetition of basic terms like 'improve' and 'solutions.' To reach a higher band, the student should focus on using more precise collocations and a wider variety of academic vocabulary to convey nuance and avoid repetitive phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. For example, 'It is common fact' (missing article), 'since quiet a few years' (incorrect preposition/spelling), and 'there is a variety of diseases... and needs' (subject-verb agreement). While these errors do not impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. The student demonstrates an ability to construct complex sentences, but the control over these structures is inconsistent. More attention to subject-verb agreement and article usage would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
