The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Science plays an important role in the development of the modern world. Some people believe that the primary purpose of science should be to improve people's lives. I completely agree with this statement because scientific advancements can improve the quality of life and help solve various problems through inventions such as electricity, mobile phones, the internet, cars and ships for transportation, which improve our lives.

One major reason is why I agree with this view that its aim should be to improve people's lives. Because of science, we invented the internet, which has a lot of applications, such as video calls. Before that, people were writing letters to each other for communication, which took a lot of time, but after mobile phones, the internet, and electricity, it take a few seconds to communicate with someone, even if he is 1000 km away. For example, in 1940 sending a letter from Peshawar to Karachi took seven days, but nowadays it takes only a few seconds to communicate via mobile phones.

Another important reason why I agree with this view is that cars and ships are the application of science that significantly improves our lives on a daily basis. In the 1800s people were traveling by horse, which takes significant time, while traveling by car from one city to another city takes a few hours. In addition, in the past it was difficult to import and export goods, but in today's world it is very easy to transport goods from one country to another by cargo ships.

In conclusion, I largely agree that the main purpose of science should be to improve people's lives. There are some drawbacks of science such as harmful chemicals and nuclear weapons but it advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The ideas are relevant, focusing on communication and transportation as key areas where science improves lives. However, the development is somewhat repetitive; the second and third paragraphs rely heavily on listing examples rather than exploring the philosophical or societal implications of the prompt. While the conclusion mentions drawbacks, this point is underdeveloped. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more nuanced analysis rather than simply listing technological inventions. The position is consistent, but the depth of argument could be improved by discussing how science might also have aims beyond immediate utility, such as pure discovery.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central topic. There is a logical progression from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'One major reason', 'Another important reason', and 'In addition', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure. Referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother to avoid a list-like feel. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the essay is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There is some repetition of basic terms like 'improve', 'lives', and 'science'. While the range is sufficient to communicate the message, there is a lack of less common or more precise academic vocabulary. Phrases like 'a lot of applications' and 'it take a few seconds' are functional but basic. To improve, you should incorporate more sophisticated collocations and topic-specific terminology related to scientific progress and societal impact to demonstrate a wider lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('it take a few seconds', 'which takes significant time') and awkward phrasing ('One major reason is why I agree...'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Punctuation is generally correct, but the sentence variety is limited. To achieve a higher band, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and experimenting with more varied complex sentence structures, such as using relative clauses or conditional forms more accurately.
