Student answer (Band 6.0)

Science plays an important role in the development of the modern world. Some people believe that the primary purpose of science should be to improve people's lives. I completely agree with this statement because scientific advancements can improve the quality of life and help solve various problems through inventions such as electricity, mobile phones, the internet, cars and ships for transportation, which improve our lives.

One major reason is why I agree with this view that its aim should be to improve people's lives. Because of science, we invented the internet, which has a lot of applications, such as video calls. Before that, people were writing letters to each other for communication, which took a lot of time, but after mobile phones, the internet, and electricity, it take a few seconds to communicate with someone, even if he is 1000 km away. For example, in 1940 sending a letter from Peshawar to Karachi took seven days, but nowadays it takes only a few seconds to communicate via mobile phones.

Another important reason why I agree with this view is that cars and ships are the application of science that significantly improves our lives on a daily basis. In the 1800s people were traveling by horse, which takes significant time, while traveling by car from one city to another city takes a few hours. In addition, in the past it was difficult to import and export goods, but in today's world it is very easy to transport goods from one country to another by cargo ships.

In conclusion, I largely agree that the main purpose of science should be to improve people's lives. There are some drawbacks of science such as harmful chemicals and nuclear weapons but it advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The ideas are relevant, focusing on communication and transportation as key areas where science improves lives. However, the development is somewhat repetitive; the second and third paragraphs both rely on a 'past vs. present' comparison structure. To reach a higher band, you should aim to explore the 'extent' of the agreement more deeply—perhaps by discussing the ethical implications of science or the balance between convenience and necessity. While the conclusion acknowledges potential drawbacks, this point is not integrated into the main body, which limits the depth of the argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'One major reason', 'In addition', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as starting a sentence with 'Because of science...' as a fragment. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes repetitive, with frequent use of 'this view' and 'our lives'. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that sentences flow more naturally into one another would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. You rely on basic terms like 'improve', 'important', and 'things'. While you successfully use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'transportation', 'import and export', and 'cargo ships', the range is limited. There are also minor issues with word choice, such as 'application of science' when referring to physical objects like cars. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and collocations to express your ideas with greater nuance and academic tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('it take a few seconds', 'which takes significant time') and awkward phrasing ('One major reason is why I agree...'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on ensuring consistent verb tense usage, especially when comparing the past and present, and work on refining complex sentence structures to ensure they are error-free.
