Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the role of science in improving lives, acknowledging both benefits and drawbacks. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. While you mention fields like medicine and technology, the arguments lack depth and specific examples. For instance, the mention of 'atom bomb' is a relevant point, but it is not sufficiently expanded upon to support your position. The position is clear, but the overall argument feels like a list of points rather than a cohesive, well-supported essay. To improve, focus on developing two or three main points with detailed explanations and concrete evidence rather than listing many disparate areas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical flow is often interrupted by awkward phrasing and a lack of effective cohesive devices. Transitions between ideas are frequently missing or mechanical, such as the abrupt shift from medical advancements to the internet. The use of referencing is sometimes unclear, and the punctuation—particularly the spacing around commas and periods—is inconsistent, which hinders the reader's ability to follow the argument smoothly. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in contrast') and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that relates directly to the central argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. There is frequent repetition of basic terms like 'science', 'important', and 'life'. Some word choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as 'motive of Science' instead of 'the role of science' or 'in mints and hours' instead of 'in minutes or hours'. While you attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'Artificial intelligence' and 'diagnose', these are often surrounded by grammatical errors that detract from the overall quality. Focus on learning collocations and synonyms to express your ideas more naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Science play', 'Technologies play crucial role'), article usage (e.g., 'in 20th centuries'), and sentence structure. Many sentences are fragmented or run-on, and the misuse of punctuation—such as placing spaces before commas—is a recurring issue. While you attempt some complex structures, they are often faulty. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring subjects and verbs agree, and proofreading for punctuation errors. Reducing the complexity of your sentences until you can write them accurately will help improve your score.
