IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some advocate that the ultimate objective of all scientific sectors is improving people's quality of lives. I completely agree with this assertion because while theoretical discovery holds a significant value, the rapid advancements of science and technology must be utilized to solve real world problems for maximizing technological efficiency, increasing social connection, reducing environmental degradation and many more.

First and foremost, there are several reasons why I hold this view. One possible reason is the substantial use of technology for real life problem solving. Enhancing technological efficiency makes human life more convenient. Individuals can contact their friends and family members instantly, no matter where they are living. Nowadays, a vast amount of useful data and tools are easily accessible online. By using the tools and data people can easily expand their sets of expertise, which ultimately causes continuous skill adaptation. People can learn about new cultures, traditions, foreign languages easily without visiting another nation. Consequently, people are increasing their social connection, which is reducing the rapidly growing social isolation problem of the world. For example, individuals can talk to their foreign relatives, friends instantly. International workers can send money to their relatives from abroad.

Furthermore, researchers are focusing on reducing environmental degradation problems. Modern technologies are helping factories and industries to reduce carbon footprint. Science has a massive contribution to improve the public transport system. These days, modern vehicles are powered by electricity, which results in zero carbon emission. If the public transport like bus and train are easily accessible then people tend to use them and reduce driving their personal vehicles. For example, in China, public transport is much more convenient to use. As a result, in China, people can save their time and use it for more productive work as there are not too much traffic jam.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that, without science our life will be less convenient and inefficient.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt clearly, maintaining a consistent position throughout. The ideas are relevant, focusing on technological efficiency and environmental benefits. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat repetitive; for instance, the focus on 'social connection' and 'convenience' occupies a large portion of the essay without introducing deeper analysis. While the examples provided, such as the mention of China's public transport, are relevant, they could be more effectively linked to the core argument of why science's primary aim should be improving lives. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph offers a distinct, well-extended argument rather than reiterating similar points about convenience.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct themes. Cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Furthermore', and 'Consequently' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there is a tendency to rely on simple sentence structures to link ideas. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using more varied referencing and substitution to avoid repetitive phrasing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate and allows for clear communication of ideas. There is an attempt to use topic-specific language such as 'environmental degradation', 'carbon footprint', and 'technological efficiency'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of slightly unnatural collocations, such as 'social isolation problem of the world' or 'science has a massive contribution to improve'. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repeating basic words like 'easy' or 'useful' multiple times throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are recurring grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the public transport like bus and train') and pluralization ('there are not too much traffic jam'). The use of complex sentences is present, but they are often slightly clunky. To achieve a higher score, you should aim for greater accuracy in subject-verb agreement and article usage, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional clauses or passive voice, with more precision.
