Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is believed that main target of science should be to improve individuals lives. To a large extent, I agree with this viewpoint. My inclination is justified further.

The foremost argument to support my view is that it improves healthcare. Since there are many improvement in the medical equipment, doctors can easily detect disease in people body. Therefore, it is beneficial for people health and people live longer. For example, a recent survey in the USA showed more than thirty percent live longer after the advancement in the healthcare facilities. Moreover, technology is useful in the communication. This is because many software have been invented in the past few years. As a result, people can easily communicate with other people around the world.

Furthermore, science may be helpful in environment protection. If technology is inventing methods for reducing waste, it is beneficial for the environment. Consequently, it improve people life in a long term. For instance, scientists in the USA currently working on material which may be use for alternative of the plastic.

However, the other side is not rejected for many reasons. The foremost reason is that science has also other aims in space and research topics. When more time will be allocated in improve people lives, other fields like space cannot be explore. Hence, it is required that science should explore more topics around the globe.

In conclusion, although other factor is needed for exploration, I believe that science should be improve healthcare, communication and environment protection for people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The ideas are relevant, such as healthcare, communication, and environmental protection. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the example regarding the USA survey is vague, and the counter-argument regarding space exploration is underdeveloped, lacking specific examples or a deeper analysis of why scientific exploration beyond immediate human utility is valuable. To reach a higher band, you should provide more detailed explanations and concrete examples to support your claims, ensuring that the 'extent' of your agreement is fully explored.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'The foremost argument', 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' to signal the progression of your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel repetitive. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the sentence 'the other side is not rejected for many reasons', which is slightly awkward. Improving the variety of your linking words and ensuring that sentences within paragraphs are more tightly connected would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'healthcare facilities', 'communication', and 'environment protection'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of word-choice errors or awkward phrasing, such as 'improve people life in a long term' instead of 'improve people's lives in the long term' and 'alternative of the plastic' instead of 'alternative to plastic'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and collocations to demonstrate a wider range of lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and article usage (e.g., 'there are many improvement', 'in people body', 'science should be improve'). These errors are noticeable but do not generally impede communication. To achieve a higher score, you need to focus on accuracy in basic grammar, such as pluralization and verb forms, and aim for more consistent control when using complex sentence structures. Proofreading for these common errors would significantly improve your score.
