IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people believe that all the sceintific studies should be oriented towards raising living standards of people, while critics argue that this is not necessary. I believe that enhancing people's life must be the main target of todays modern science because at the end, mental, physical and social well-being of people matter the most.
People are struggling with series of problems these days. Issues, such as long term health problems are acting as a curse for human beings as they make people live with tremendous pain and sorrow. In these circumstances, scientists must delve into the deep of science in order to find out the solutions for these issues. Consequently, this will help human society to get relief, making them feel their lives much lighter. For example, there is no worth on conducting research on Mars while people on Earth are going through great sufferings.
Furthermore, still different areas of the people need to be addressed. For example, poverty is a hard reality that exists in human society. Had the hunger been already eliminated from entire world, one can orient science towards other fields. But the reality is still we have to fight with these pressing issues, and focusing scientific research in other areas is not justifiable. So, it is wise to work for the sake of humanity and social prosperity.
In conclusion, science and scientific study is worth only when they improve people's lives because if people have to live life full of discomfort and pain, then a question raises like, for whom people have developed science.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. You have provided relevant arguments, such as the focus on health and poverty, to support your stance. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding Mars exploration is a good starting point but could be more deeply explored to show a more nuanced understanding of scientific priorities. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully extended with more specific examples or logical consequences, avoiding slight over-generalizations about the nature of scientific research.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', and 'For example' to link your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel slightly repetitive. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of referencing and substitution to avoid repeating the same nouns. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'oriented', 'justifiable', and 'prosperity'. There are some spelling errors, such as 'sceintific' and 'todays' (missing apostrophe), and some slightly awkward collocations like 'delve into the deep of science'. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Expanding your repertoire of academic collocations and ensuring accurate word forms will help improve your score in this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'Had the hunger been already eliminated...' and the relative clause '...for whom people have developed science'. However, there are frequent minor errors, including missing articles ('the entire world'), subject-verb agreement issues ('a question raises'), and punctuation slips. While these errors do not impede communication, they are persistent enough to prevent the essay from reaching the 7.0 band. Focusing on proofreading for small grammatical slips will significantly enhance the quality of your writing.
