IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
It is often argued that the main purpose of science should be to improve people's lives. I completely agree with this statement because scientific development can improve people's health and make their daily lives easier. This essay will explain these reasons in detail.
The main reason why I agree with this view is that science can greatly improve people's health and increase their life expectancy. This is because scientific research allows doctors and researchers to develop new medicines, vaccines and medical equipment to prevent and treat different diseases. In the past, many people died from illnesses that are now easier to control because of scientific discoveries. For example, modern medical technology can help doctors detect serious diseases at an early stage and provide suitable treatment. In addition, vaccines can protect people from dangerous infectious diseases and reduce their spread in society. As a result, people can live longer, healthier and more comfortable lives. Therefore, improving human health is one of the most important ways in which science can contribute to people's quality of life.
Another important reason is that science makes people's daily lives easier and more convenient. This is because modern scientific inventions can save people's time and effort. For example, smartphones, washing machines, computers and modern transport allow people to complete many daily activities more quickly. As a result, people can live more comfortably and have more time for other activities. Therefore, science plays an important role in improving people's quality of life.
In conclusion, I completely agree that the main aim of science should be to improve people's lives. This is because science can improve people's health and make their daily lives easier and more convenient. Therefore, scientific development should focus on creating a better quality of life for people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response fully addresses the prompt by taking a clear position and supporting it with two distinct, relevant arguments: health improvements and daily convenience. The ideas are well-developed, with specific examples like vaccines and smartphones provided to illustrate the points. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main arguments. To reach a higher band, the essay could benefit from a more nuanced exploration, perhaps by briefly acknowledging the potential risks of scientific advancement or discussing the ethical implications of prioritizing certain types of research, which would demonstrate a more sophisticated level of critical thinking.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a clear central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'The main reason', 'In addition', 'As a result', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. However, the transitions are somewhat formulaic and repetitive. To improve, you could vary the cohesive devices further and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid, rather than relying on standard signposting phrases at the start of every paragraph.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message clearly and accurately. You use topic-specific terms such as 'life expectancy', 'infectious diseases', and 'scientific discoveries' appropriately. While the range is adequate for the task, it is somewhat limited and lacks the more sophisticated, less common lexical items that would characterize a higher band. The word choices are generally precise, but there is a reliance on simpler, high-frequency words. Incorporating more academic collocations and synonyms would enhance the overall quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a good control of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly throughout. You successfully use complex structures, such as 'This is because scientific research allows doctors and researchers to develop...', which shows a good command of sentence construction. There are no significant errors that impede communication. To achieve a higher score, you could incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice constructions, to demonstrate greater flexibility.
