Student answer (Band 5.5)

A considerable amount of money and hardwork is spent by us humans on science and its advancements; this makes many people believe that the primary purpose of this effort should be to improve homo sapien life. I wholeheartedly agree with the argument and the essay below elucidates my stance.

It's said that its been millions of years we have been living on the planet, still the more issues we resolve even more of them seem to arise. Eventhough science has resolved some of the gravest problems of human life, it has not yet reached the level we would ideally want it to have achieved. For Example, Cancer has been a disease which has taken countless loved ones from us yet we have not been able to fully eradicate this menance from our lives.

Apart from medical sciences, other sciences that improve the human life such as efforts on climate change, economic development, equal opportunities, resource management, overpopulation handling, war prevention, artificial intelligence and justice for all, are also of paramount importance as they promote the standards of human living.

In conclusion, the primary aim of science should be to improve human life. Although efforts like wildlife conservation and veterinary sciences, are also essential, improved human life would lead to more work and advancements in these fields as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, which significantly impacts the development of ideas. While you clearly state your position in the introduction, the body paragraphs are underdeveloped. You list several areas of science, such as 'climate change' and 'economic development,' but you do not explain how these specifically relate to the core argument of improving human life. To reach a higher band, you must expand on your points with specific examples and logical reasoning. The conclusion is also brief and does not fully synthesize the arguments presented. The under-length penalty is applied here as the task instructions were not fully followed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of your argument. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Apart from' and 'In conclusion,' to link ideas. However, the transitions between sentences are sometimes mechanical, and the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words. Paragraphing is present, but the paragraphs themselves are quite short, which limits the depth of the discussion. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated cohesive devices to connect your supporting ideas to your main topic sentences more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'elucidates,' 'paramount importance,' and 'eradicate.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and spelling, such as 'menance' (menace) and 'Eventhough' (Even though). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on using less common lexical items more accurately and ensure that your spelling is precise. Expanding your vocabulary to include more academic collocations would also be beneficial for a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'It's said that its been millions of years we have been living' (It is said that it has been millions of years since we have been living) and 'For Example, Cancer has been a disease' (unnecessary capitalization). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor issues with comma usage. While the meaning remains clear, the frequency of these errors suggests a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of complex sentence construction.
