Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, Science plays a fundamental role in shaping the society. There is a growing debate about whether the significant objective of science should be to improve people's lives. Although there are some other benefits of modern science, I believe that the most important purpose of the science should be to enhance the life of individuals.

There are several reasons to support that approach. One of the main reason is that, the science allows a large number of innovations specially in healthcare sector. For example, Different instruments and vaccines are made for the treatment of various diseases. This is because most of the diseases are now treated properly which is not happened in the past. Moreover, in covid years, everyone stuck in the home and prevent to meet with others to avoid coronavirus. The whole world was disturbed, economy collapsed and there was a situation which was no one want to experience again. However, innovation of covid-vaccines give the solution of that world-wide recognized virus.

In addition, science also have a significant role in convinient communication and transportation. For instance, now study become more convinient as anyone can get lectures from any part of the world without actually being present at the university. Furthermore now individuals easily travel in foreign countries without wasting a lot of time. It means that introduction of aeroplanes and helicopters make the life easier.

However science also studied to gain knowledge of the universe. To explain this, identifying different stars and glaxies may not improve the lives of public but its essential for research.

In conclusion, the main aim of the scientific study is to enhance the lifestyle, while its may be learned to have some research on different things of the universe.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The main ideas—healthcare innovation and communication/transportation—are relevant and supported with examples. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The discussion on the 'other' purpose of science (gaining knowledge of the universe) is brief and lacks depth, which prevents the argument from being fully extended. While the position is clear, the analysis could benefit from more nuanced exploration of the tension between pure research and applied science to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In addition,' 'For instance,' and 'However,' though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but there are instances where the flow is interrupted by awkward phrasing or repetitive sentence structures. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the main arguments from the counter-argument and the conclusion, which helps the reader follow the writer's line of reasoning.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'innovations,' 'healthcare sector,' and 'collapsed.' However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'convinient' (spelling), 'innovation of covid-vaccines' (collocation), and 'its may be learned' (grammar/word choice). The range is sufficient for the task, but the lack of more sophisticated or precise lexical items limits the score to a 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the science,' 'the society'), subject-verb agreement ('science also have,' 'innovation... give'), and tense usage ('which is not happened'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some unnecessary commas. While the writer attempts complex sentences, the frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents the essay from reaching a higher band, as these errors are noticeable throughout the text.
