Student answer (Band 5.5)

Improvement of individual's lives should be the main crucial goal of science. In my view, I totally agree agree with this statement because science has make people's lives more convenient the way they are living now.

Firstly, science invented many sophisticated technologies, which helps people to improve their lives. Nowadays, many people travelling one country to another by using airplane, car, bus, train etc, which helps people to trade and travel between different countries. Secondly, many factories has manufactured their products by using a variety of machines, which has reduced the costs of employee and the long production time. If science haven't introduced these invention to people, their lives will become more difficult.

One the other hand, today, social media also making people's communication system more easy. There is a several social media app in the internet, by using these many people communicate with each other with audio and video calls, they also scroll their phones and also watch the current affairs of the world. Many international students also submit their presentation via their emails using their phone, these and the advancement of science; and these are the science's ambitious to improve people's loves.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 195 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas, as the essay is incomplete and lacks a concluding paragraph. While you clearly state your position in the introduction, the supporting arguments are under-developed. For instance, the points regarding transportation and social media are mentioned but not fully explored or linked back to the core argument of 'improving lives' with sufficient depth. To improve, ensure you provide a full introduction, two or three well-developed body paragraphs with specific examples, and a clear conclusion to fully address all parts of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay shows some basic organization through the use of linking words like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'On the other hand'. However, the progression of ideas is hindered by the incomplete nature of the text. Paragraphing is present, but the final paragraph is cut off mid-sentence, which disrupts the logical flow. Cohesive devices are used in a somewhat mechanical way. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices to link sentences and ideas more naturally, and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence followed by supporting details that flow logically.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for basic communication but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on simple phrases such as 'make people's lives more convenient' and 'many people'. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'reduced the costs of employee' (should be 'labor costs') and 'communication system more easy' (should be 'easier'). To improve, try to incorporate more academic vocabulary and precise collocations. Avoid repetitive phrasing and focus on using words that accurately convey your intended meaning in a formal context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'science has make' (should be 'has made'), 'many factories has manufactured' (should be 'have manufactured'), and 'If science haven't introduced' (should be 'hadn't introduced'). The sentence structures are relatively simple, and there is a lack of complex sentence variety. To improve, focus on mastering subject-verb agreement and the correct use of conditional tenses. Practice constructing more complex sentences using subordinating conjunctions to demonstrate a wider range of grammatical control.
