Student answer (Band 5.5)

Improving individual's lives should be the primary goal of science. In my view, I totally agree with this statement because science has make people's lives more convenient the way they are living now.

Firstly, science invented many sophisticated technologies, which helps people to improve their lives. Nowadays, many people travelling one country to another by using airplane, car, bus, train etc, which helps people to trade and travel between different countries. Secondly, many factories has manufactured their products by using a variety of machines, which has reduced the costs of employee and the long production time. If science haven't introduced these creation to people, their lives will become more difficult.

One the other hand, today, social media also making people's communication system more easy. There is a several social media app in the internet, by using these many people communicate with each other with audio and video calls, they also scroll their phones and also watch the current affairs of the world. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of the statement. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention transportation, manufacturing, and communication, the arguments are presented as a list of examples rather than a deep exploration of the 'extent' to which science should focus on improving lives. For instance, you touch upon the role of science in hospitals, but the connection back to the main argument could be more analytical. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph provides a more nuanced discussion of the implications of your points rather than just listing technological advancements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear introduction and conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' to signal the structure. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the use of referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'these and the advancement of science'. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that pronouns clearly refer back to the intended nouns to create a smoother progression of ideas throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'sophisticated technologies', 'manufactured', and 'current affairs'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is repetition of basic words like 'lives', 'people', and 'science'. There are also some minor collocation issues, such as 'communication system more easy' instead of 'easier' or 'more accessible'. To achieve a higher score, focus on incorporating more precise academic vocabulary and varying your word choices to avoid repetition.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('science has make', 'factories has manufactured', 'hospitals has use') and tense inconsistencies ('If science haven't introduced... their lives will become'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent. To improve, focus on mastering basic verb forms and ensuring that your subject and verb agree in number, as well as practicing the correct use of conditional sentences.
