Student answer (Band 6.0)

THE MOST IMPORTANT AIM OF SCIENCE SHOULD BE TO IMPROVE PEOPLE'S LIFE. IT IS OFTEN ARGUED THAT SCIENCE IS A MEAN TO FULFILL THE DESIRE TO INVESTIGHATE THE NATURE, BUT I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT THE MAIN PURPOSE OF SCIENCE IS TO MAKE DISCOVERIES TO IMPROVE THE LIFE OF PEOPLE.

THE MAIN REASON FOR THIS OPINION IS THAT IF SCIENTISTS CONSIDER THIS AIM, THEY WILL MAKE RESEARCH PROJECTS FOR THE WELL-BEING OF MANKIND WITHOUT CONSIDERING THEIR PERSONAL INTERESTS. SOMETIMES THE SCIENTISTS DO RESEARCH PROJECTS THAT WILL CAUSE HARMFUL EFFECTS ON THE HUMANITY. FOR INTANCE, THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE WEAPONS HAS CAUSED A NEGATIVE EFFECT ON THE SOCIETY, THUS CAUSED CHAOS INSTEAD OF PEACE IN THE SIOCIETY.

ANOTHER SIGNIFICANT REASON FOR THIS VIEW IS THAT SCIENTISTS SHOULD CONSIDER IMPROVING LIVING STANDARD OF THE MANKIND WHICH IS THE SOLE AIM OF SCIENCE RATHER THAN MAKING THINGS FOR THE COMMERCIAL PURPOSES. THE CLEAR EXAMPLE OF THIS IS THE PRODUCTION OF FIREWORKS AND OTHER EXPLOSIVE MATERIALS THAT HAVE NO BENEFIT, HOWEVER IT SOMETIMES CAUSES SEVERE INJURIES.

THE MAIN AIM OF THE SCIENCE SHOULD BE TO IMPROVE OUR LIVING STANDARD AND INNOVATIONS SHOULD HELP THE COUNTRY IN INCREASING ITS ECONOMY, IMPROVING HEALTH CARE STANDARDS, REDUCING UNEMPLOYMENT AND TO COMBAT POVERTY BY INCREASING FOOD RESOURCES.

THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD DEVELOP STRICT LEGISLATION REGARDING THESE CONCERNS. THE LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES SHOULD IMPLEMENT SUCH LAWS THAT FOCUS ON USING SCIENTIFIC PROJECTS FOR UPGRADING OUR LIVING STANDARD. THERE SHOULD BE A COMMITTEE WHICH WILL TAKE CONTROL OF THESE RESEARCH PROJECTS AND PROVIDE NECESSARY FUNDINGS TO SUPPORT SUCH PROJECT THAT WILL BENEFIT MANKIND.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that science should prioritize human well-being. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of weaponry and commercial interests, but the development is somewhat repetitive. While the position is consistent, the arguments could be more nuanced; for example, the essay focuses heavily on the negative aspects of science rather than exploring the balance between pure research and applied science. The conclusion introduces new ideas about government legislation and committees, which feels slightly disconnected from the main argument about the 'aim' of science. Overall, the task is addressed, but the depth of analysis is limited.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'The main reason for this opinion is' and 'Another significant reason', which helps the flow. However, some transitions are mechanical, and the logical progression between the body paragraphs and the final paragraph is weak. The final paragraph shifts focus from the 'aim of science' to 'government legislation', which disrupts the coherence of the argument. Referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure could be improved by ensuring each paragraph directly supports the thesis statement without introducing new, unrelated topics.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are several instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'science is a mean to fulfill the desire to investigate the nature' and 'making things for the commercial purposes'. Spelling errors are present, such as 'INVESTIGHATE' and 'SIOCIETY'. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'well-being', 'legislation', and 'innovation', the range is somewhat limited, and the word choices are occasionally imprecise or non-idiomatic. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on more natural collocations and proofreading for spelling accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the life of people', 'the humanity', 'the society') and pluralization ('the development of the weapons'). Some sentences are clunky, such as 'THE MAIN AIM OF THE SCIENCE SHOULD BE TO IMPROVE OUR LIVING STANDARD AND INNOVATIONS SHOULD HELP THE COUNTRY IN INCREASING ITS ECONOMY'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. A greater focus on subject-verb agreement and correct article usage would significantly improve the clarity and accuracy of the writing.
