Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often argue that the main goal of science should be to do work for the betterment of humanity. I strongly agree with this statement because it will enhance people's lives. This essay will discuss a few reasons to clarify my position.

The primary reason why I am in favor of this statement is that, when new research takes place to benefit individuals. Firstly, it would bring numerous advantages as advanced diagnostic methods such as MRI, CT Scan, these tools help to diagnose diseases earlier which help patients to get desired treatment. Additionally, with the advancement of technology like social media, it becomes easy for all to get information about anything either it is related to the studies, business, and domestic activities. Social media always provides substantial options. For instance, now due to advance clinical practice cancer is possible to treat.

However, science is also promoting astronomical studies which is somehow beneficial for the society and plays an indispensable role to broadcast the weather. Climate forecasts help residents to be ready for upcoming weather threats. Nevertheless, some proponents believe that it is wastage of money to explore sky, in their view it will be more beneficial to allocate money to invent more advance technologies which will help individuals to get better treatment. For instance, as technology revolution provide incredible ways to give best treatment of severe diseases. Nonetheless, still a few diseases are still untreated like GBS, Leukemia. Science should investigate to treat these life-threatening conditions.

In conclusion, science is already working for ways to benefit humanity. It is suggested to focus entirely to do investigations for humanity instead of studying weather, wildlife and so on.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the first body paragraph provides examples like MRI and social media, the connection between social media and the core argument is weak. The second paragraph attempts to acknowledge counter-arguments regarding astronomical research but lacks depth in its rebuttal. The conclusion introduces a new, slightly contradictory suggestion that science should 'focus entirely' on humanity, which borders on over-generalisation. To reach a higher band, you should ensure that every example directly supports your main thesis and avoid introducing new, sweeping arguments in the conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Additionally', 'However', and 'In conclusion' to link your thoughts. However, some transitions feel mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'Social media always provides substantial options', which lacks a clear link to the previous point. Furthermore, the use of 'Nevertheless' and 'Nonetheless' in the same paragraph is slightly repetitive. Improving the variety of your linking phrases and ensuring that each sentence flows naturally from the previous one will enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'betterment', 'indispensable', and 'life-threatening'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'it is often argue' (should be 'argued'), 'wastage of money to explore sky' (should be 'the sky'), and 'technology revolution provide' (should be 'provides'). Some phrasing is also slightly unnatural, such as 'do work for the betterment'. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations and ensure that your word forms are grammatically accurate in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that occasionally impede the flow. Examples include 'when new research takes place to benefit individuals' (a sentence fragment), 'cancer is possible to treat' (awkward phrasing), and 'it is suggested to focus entirely to do investigations' (incorrect infinitive usage). Subject-verb agreement and article usage also need attention. While these errors rarely prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they are frequent enough to limit the score. Increasing your control over complex structures will help improve this.
