IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

It is often argued that the primary purpose of scientific research and development should be to enhance human standard of living. I completely agree with this statement, as scientific progress ultimately derives its value from its ability to alleviate human suffering and solve global challenges, even though basic theoretical exploration remains a necessary foundation.

The chief reason why improving human lives should be science’s main focus is its direct impact on health and longevity. Throughout history, major scientific breakthroughs such as the discovery of antibiotics, the development of vaccines, and advanced medical imaging have eradicated deadly diseases and significantly increased average life expectancy worldwide. When research prioritizes public health, it yields tangible benefits that directly improve individual well-being and societal productivity.

Furthermore, applying science to practical human needs is essential for addressing existential environmental and economic challenges. Issues such as climate change, food insecurity, and energy shortages require targeted scientific innovation. For instance, the advancement of renewable energy technologies, like solar and wind power, alongside agricultural developments in drought-resistant crops, directly safeguards communities against starvation and environmental degradation. Without a focus on human welfare, scientific progress risks becoming detached from the pressing needs of global society.

However, acknowledging human progress as the ultimate goal does not mean ignoring theoretical or curiosity-driven research. Fundamental research such as theoretical physics or space exploration often yields unforeseen breakthroughs that eventually transform daily life. For example, satellite technology developed for space programs now powers global navigation and telecommunications. Therefore, theoretical science ultimately serves the primary purpose of improving lives, even if those benefits are realized in the long term.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that enhancing human life should remain the ultimate goal of scientific endeavors. Whether through immediate medical and environmental applications or long-term theoretical discoveries, scientific progress gains its true purpose when it contributes to the betterment of humanity.
