Student answer (Band 8.0)

As we move into the 21st century, an increasing number of people have the notion that the primary purpose of scientific advancement should be to enhance human life. I strongly agree with this view, because scientific research is most valuable when it addresses human needs, although fundamental research should also be encouraged for long-term progress.

To begin with, science has the potential to revolutionise healthcare and prolong human life. Through medical research, numerous diseases can be diagnosed earlier, treated more effectively, and, in some cases, prevented altogether. Moreover, technological innovations have made healthcare more accessible and precise. For example, the development of vaccines and advanced diagnostic equipment has significantly reduced the impact of infectious diseases. Therefore, scientific discoveries that alleviate suffering and improve public health should arguably remain a central priority.

Furthermore, science can enhance living standards by addressing pressing global challenges. Renewable-energy technologies, efficient agricultural methods, and water-purification systems can help societies become more sustainable while meeting essential human needs. For instance, solar and wind power are increasingly being used to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and mitigate environmental damage. Such innovations not only benefit present generations but also safeguard resources for future populations.

Nevertheless, I believe that science should not be restricted exclusively to immediate human benefits. Pure scientific research, including investigations into space, physics, and genetics, may initially appear to have little practical value but can produce unforeseen breakthroughs in the future. The development of the internet, for instance, was rooted partly in scientific and technological research that later transformed communication and commerce.

In conclusion, although scientific exploration should remain broad and curiosity-driven, improving human welfare should be its foremost objective. Research that advances healthcare, sustainability, and quality of life offers tangible benefits, while fundamental discoveries should simultaneously be supported because their long-term applications cannot always be predicted.
