Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is undeniable that vast increase in science plays an important role in this modern economy. In this regard, the most important aim of science should be to improve people's lives. I agree to a large extent with this notion including relevant illustrations explain in forthcoming fragments with a logical conclusion.

In recent years, due to profound research into the human body by scientists, there have been giant leaps in the vast availability of treatments and cures being discovered for a large number of previously incurable diseases. For instance, the treatment and management of the increasingly prevalent disease known as diabetes, has become widely accessible and very cost effective. This is made possible due to the constant advancements in the field of science.

Furthermore, with the advent of various machines and robots, the daily menial and difficult tasks have become easier and more efficient to perform. For example, the invention of the modern car has provided man with luxuries that were unimaginable a couple centuries ago. Another example would be the introduction of the smartphone which has made long distance communication hassle free and efficient. This would not be achievable without the use of science.

In conclusion, science has allowed us to become healthier and live more efficiently due to the invention of modern medicines, and many advanced machines and gadgets. Thus, taking into consideration the benefits that science has provided for humans, I fully agree that the primary focus by scientists should be improving our quality of life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The essay addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the response is 249 words long, failing to meet the 250-word minimum requirement. This under-length results in a penalty, as the development of ideas is slightly constrained. While the arguments regarding medical advancements and technological convenience are relevant and supported with examples, the lack of depth in the conclusion and the brevity of the overall response prevent it from reaching a higher band. To improve, ensure that each body paragraph provides more detailed analysis or a counter-argument to fully explore the 'extent' of your agreement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be more sophisticated. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the essay would benefit from a more nuanced use of referencing and substitution to avoid repetitive sentence structures.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'profound research', 'prevalent', and 'unimaginable'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'vast increase in science' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'illustrations explain in forthcoming fragments' (which is overly formal and slightly awkward). The range is sufficient for the task, but more precise and varied vocabulary would elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is generally good control over grammar, and errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. For example, the use of passive voice in 'This is made possible' and the conditional structure in 'This would not be achievable' are handled well. However, there are occasional minor errors, such as the missing article in 'vast increase' and the slightly awkward phrasing in the introduction. The punctuation is generally accurate, supporting the overall clarity of the writing.
