IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is a matter of debate that should science must focus on improving and enhancing the lives of people or work upon other factors such as space exploration and so on. In this regard, people argue that the main focus of science must to enhance the lives. I agree up-to a large extent with this notion due to forth stated points before citing a reasonable conclusion.

First and foremost step that scientists must take it to develop the healthcare facilities for all the people across the globe. As uncertainties such as numerous types of diseases arise and come into existence and to handle them and find a cure scientist must make a suitable antidote which will save the humanity but it will only be possible if improving people's lives is the main interest of science. For example, during the period of COVID-19 the main focus of science was to create a cure for the disease and scientists were eventually successful in having humanity.

Other field that could become a interest for science is technology, specifically for the general population such as agricultural advancements, communication and transport development that would raise the living standard of the people. For instance, creating new seeds with mutations could help the farmers produce better yields and advancements in the areas of communication and transportation could help people save their time that could be invested in more productive tasks.

However, science must not entirely focus on improving people's lives as it must also accomplish tasks such as space and universe exploration and doing new inventions as they are also important for humanity to make advancements in other areas also. As a result not only the lives of people will be greatly transformed but the necessary functions of science will not be completely out-looked.

To conclude, as enhancing the lives of people must be prime interest of scientists yet the other important functions of science must not be ignored at any cost. Thus, I firmly believe that science must focus on improving the lives of people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, maintaining a clear position throughout. The main ideas—healthcare and technological advancement—are relevant and supported with examples like COVID-19 and agricultural innovation. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited; the explanation of why space exploration is important is quite brief and lacks depth. While the position is consistent, the argument could be strengthened by exploring the tension between immediate human needs and long-term scientific discovery more thoroughly. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, such as healthcare or technology. Cohesive devices are used, though some are slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as 'First and foremost step' and 'In this regard'. The transition between the argument for improving lives and the counter-argument regarding space exploration is clear, though the flow between sentences could be smoother in places. Paragraphing is used appropriately to manage the progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. The student uses some topic-specific terms like 'healthcare facilities', 'agricultural advancements', and 'space exploration'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'forth stated points' (instead of 'aforementioned'), 'out-looked' (instead of 'overlooked'), and 'have humanity' (which is unclear). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score. More sophisticated synonyms and natural phrasing would improve the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'It is a matter of debate that should science must focus' (redundant modal verbs), 'main focus of science must to enhance' (missing verb), and 'Other field that could become a interest' (missing article). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. The student demonstrates an attempt at complex structures, but control over these is inconsistent.
