IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The most important aim of science is to make people’s life easier by innovations. And science has been doing this for centuries. Before the modern machienry was invented all hard work had to be done by ordinary people.People had to grow crops with bulls in scorching heat of sun, they had to crush the stones by hands, lift heavy loads on their backs an travel long distances on foot.People had no way to communicate to eachother except pigeons. This method of communication was very time taking and not very reliable aswell.
But as the science evolved human life kept getting better and easier.Science helped us build large and heavy machinery for heavy works, tractors has made the lives of farmers very easy,we can now travel by car, bus, bike etc. because of science.Humans can travel thousands of miles in just few hours because of airplanes.Communicating with our loved ones from across the world has become a child's play due to smartphone. We can talk to through voice call but we can also see their faces at the same time through video calls. Now a days we can order anything we want and it will be delivered to our doorstep which is really amazing. We no longer have to care about the heat of summers or cold of winters due to air conditionars and heaters.A few decades back all of this was considered impossible but science has made it possible in a very short time.
On the other hand another purpose of science is to research and uncover the truths of universe.Once our anccestors looked at the moon and the sun and assumed they were gods and used to fear them. But the science has now erased all the superstitions like that and has made us logical. Now we think there might be a reason behind everything that is happening in universe.Science has not only helped us explore the earth but it has also made it possible to take humans to moon and other planets.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the role of science in improving lives and uncovering truths. However, the position is not clearly established in the introduction; the essay lists benefits rather than arguing to what extent the author agrees with the statement. While the ideas are relevant, the development is somewhat descriptive rather than analytical. The conclusion is missing, which leaves the argument unfinished. To reach a higher band, you should clearly state your position in the introduction and ensure that each paragraph directly supports that stance with a concluding summary.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. Transitions between ideas are often abrupt or missing, such as the jump from agricultural machinery to smartphones. Cohesive devices are used sparingly and sometimes incorrectly, for example, 'But as the science evolved' and 'On the other hand another purpose'. The lack of a concluding paragraph significantly impacts the overall coherence of the piece. Using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in contrast') would help guide the reader through your arguments more effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. There are several spelling errors, such as 'machienry', 'an' (instead of 'and'), 'eachother', 'anccestors', and 'conditionars'. Some phrasing is informal or repetitive, such as 'child's play' and 'really amazing'. To improve, focus on using more academic collocations and ensure accurate spelling. Expanding your range to include more sophisticated topic-specific vocabulary related to scientific advancement would also be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures. While there are some attempts at complex sentences, they are often marred by punctuation errors, such as missing spaces after commas and periods. There are frequent grammatical slips, including article usage ('in scorching heat of sun'), subject-verb agreement ('tractors has made'), and prepositional errors ('talk to through'). The range of structures is limited, and the consistent minor errors indicate a need for more careful proofreading and practice with complex sentence construction.
