Student answer (Band 5.5)

Science is the study of everything around us either it is living or non living. Every law of nature is examined and studied under this subject. and If we look back in time, people started to investigate the world arround them in order to make their lives easier and better. So I totally stand with the idea that the most important aim of science should be to imrpove people's lives.

If we simply look back in time and see why the people started investigating their surroundings and the changing conditions around them, we find one most prominent answer, that is to adapt to the changes around them and increase chances of their survival. poeple started to organise their investigations and their findings into different subjects and started to study deeper in the ones they found interesting and science is one of those subjects. Its evident from our history that everything we accomplished either in medicine or information technology is the result of many years of study and experimentation in these subjects.

There are some contradicting examples also found in history where along with the studies of betterment of mankind, some people invested their minds and time in creating weapons that can be used to either protect them from the enemy or to destroy one. and its a sad reality that on the both ends of the weapon is man himself.

We have achieved many milestones through science which once seemed impossible so ideal world would be where we can set aside our conflicts and these petty disputes and together invest our knowledge in the betterment and prosperity of mankind.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of science aiming to improve lives. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention medicine and technology as positive outcomes, the discussion regarding weapons is brief and lacks depth. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your arguments with more specific examples or nuanced reasoning. For instance, explaining how scientific research into climate change or renewable energy directly improves human survival would have strengthened your position. The conclusion is a bit idealistic and could be more firmly linked to the main body arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive. For example, the phrase 'If we simply look back in time' is used in the first and second paragraphs, which reduces the flow. Additionally, some transitions between sentences are abrupt, such as the start of the third paragraph. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between ideas would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the sophistication required for higher bands. There are several spelling errors, such as 'imrpove' and 'arround', and some phrasing is simplistic, such as 'invested their minds and time'. While you successfully convey your meaning, the range of vocabulary is limited. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid basic errors in spelling and word choice. Using more varied terminology related to scientific progress would also be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the people', 'the both ends') and punctuation (missing capitalization after periods, such as 'and If'). Some sentences are also slightly awkward, such as 'either it is living or non living'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent punctuation will help improve your score.
