IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 8.0)

The primary purpose of science should be to improve the quality of people’s lives. I strongly agree with this view because scientific progress has the greatest value when it addresses human needs, although scientific research should also be allowed to pursue knowledge for its own sake.

One of the most significant ways science improves people’s lives is through advances in healthcare. Scientific research has resulted in vaccines, effective medicines, medical imaging and sophisticated surgical techniques, enabling people to live longer and healthier lives. For instance, the rapid development of vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic helped protect millions of people from severe illness and reduced pressure on healthcare systems. Similarly, ongoing research into cancer and cardiovascular diseases continues to improve survival rates and patients’ quality of life. These examples demonstrate that scientific discoveries can have a direct and profound impact on society.

Science is also essential for addressing major environmental and social challenges. Renewable energy technologies, such as solar and wind power, can reduce dependence on fossil fuels and contribute to a cleaner environment. Scientific innovations in agriculture have also increased crop yields and helped farmers use water and fertilisers more efficiently. Furthermore, advances in information and communication technology have transformed education and employment by allowing people to access information, study remotely and communicate instantly across geographical boundaries.

However, it would be unrealistic to argue that every scientific investigation must have an immediate practical purpose. Basic research often produces knowledge whose applications are not apparent at the time of discovery. For example, research into fundamental physics and space science has contributed to technologies that are now widely used in everyday life. Therefore, scientific research should not be restricted solely to problems that require an immediate solution. At the same time, scientific developments should be guided by ethical principles because some technologies can be misused and potentially cause serious harm.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that improving people’s lives should be the most important aim of science. Nevertheless, this objective should include both solving current problems and supporting fundamental research that may benefit humanity in the future. Ultimately, science is most valuable when it advances knowledge while being used responsibly for the benefit of society.
