Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the benefits of science in agriculture and medicine. However, the task asks for the extent of your agreement regarding whether improving lives should be the 'most important' aim. The essay focuses on the benefits of science but fails to critically evaluate if this is the primary or most important goal compared to other potential aims, such as pure knowledge acquisition or environmental preservation. The position is implied rather than explicitly stated and maintained throughout. To reach a higher band, you must directly address the 'most important' aspect of the prompt by weighing it against other possibilities, rather than simply listing the positive impacts of scientific advancement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Furthermore'. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes mechanical, and the links between sentences can be repetitive. For instance, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is somewhat abrupt. Additionally, the conclusion is quite brief and does not effectively synthesise the arguments presented. Improving the variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that links back to the main argument would enhance the logical flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'technological revolutions', 'living organisms', and 'origination'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'usefull thing' (useful things) and 'prospective' (perspective). Some phrasing is slightly unnatural, such as 'origination of CT scan device' and 'make the lives of human easy'. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and academic vocabulary. You have a sufficient range to communicate your ideas, but the lack of flexibility and occasional errors in word formation prevent a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the technological revolutions'), pluralisation ('lives of human'), and verb agreement. For example, 'science causes many major transformation' should be 'transformations'. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor slips throughout. You attempt complex structures, but these often contain errors that slightly impede the flow. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as these are consistent issues throughout the text.
