The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In these recent decades, the world has witnessed technological revolutions, inventions and global shifts. These developments describe the way societies and their people function. The invention of science brings incredible changes in human lives and enhances multiple aspects of life.
On the one hand, science supplies several methods and fertilizers to improve the growth of crops in order to fulfill the needs of people. Furthermore, many organizations are using science in various ways such as changing the genes of plants and trees to make them more fruitful and colourful. For instance, in the past decades, a few researchers tried to breed the red rose flower plant with a lily flower plant and in the result the new kind of flower formed. This flower contains the ability of both plants such as fragrance, appearance and colours.
On the other hand, science causes many major transformations in living organisms' lives. It created several medical equipment, medicines and machines that assist the medical officers to investigate what health issues a person has and also in the process of making the person healthy and physically well. For example, the origination of a CT scan device helps to find the both major and minor diseases in each part of homo sapiens such as brain, heart, liver and so on. Additionally, it also stops the expansion of the illnesses to other sections of the body.
In conclusion, science has brought many useful things in every field of life and makes the lives of human easy and simple. From my perspective, the uses of science have become a significant factor in everyone's life. Moreover, i also recommend using science for further development

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the benefits of science in agriculture and medicine. However, the task asks for the extent of your agreement with the statement that the 'most important' aim should be to improve lives. You have provided examples of how science improves lives, but you have not fully explored the 'extent' of your agreement or considered potential counter-arguments or alternative aims of science (such as pure discovery or environmental preservation). The position is clear, but the development is somewhat limited to descriptive examples rather than a critical evaluation of the prompt's specific claim. To improve, ensure you address the 'most important' aspect of the prompt more directly.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'Furthermore,' and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, the transition between ideas within paragraphs can be slightly mechanical. For instance, the link between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be smoother. Additionally, some referencing is slightly repetitive, and the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of cohesive markers to connect sentences more fluidly. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'technological revolutions,' 'transformations,' and 'origination.' However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice or awkward collocations, such as 'origination of a CT scan device' (instead of 'development' or 'introduction') and 'make the lives of human easy' (should be 'humans'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher band scores. Expanding your range to include more academic collocations and precise terminology would be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'In these recent decades' (should be 'In recent decades'), 'in the result the new kind of flower formed' (awkward phrasing), and 'find the both major and minor diseases' (incorrect article usage). There are also minor punctuation and capitalization issues, such as the lowercase 'i' in the conclusion. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
