IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The most significant purpose of scientific research should always be to improve human's lives. I strongly agree because science should always consider people's health and convenience as their prime motive.
There is still need for some medical research in certain areas to provide treatment for some diseases, for which still proper treatment has not identified. Many people are suffering from those diseases and lose the battle of their lives without proper treatment. If the researchers focus mainly on solution for those treatment, it will result in the decreased death rate from those diseases. Government should also provide funding and incentives for scientists that are working on those areas to provide better insights. For example, Many patients are prone to death at the final stages of the cancer, if they are not identified at initial stage, due to the lack of pertinent treatment in the later stages.
Moreover, technology can help to provide more facilities in people's day to day life. Many people have to drive their cars by themself for travel and to reach their desired destination, some of them are aged and it feels difficult for them to accelerate , brake and steer on daily basis. If science makes more improvements in the self-driven cars, it will enhance the experience of the elders in daily life. For example, Tesla allows autopilot, where drivers don't need to perform all the operations manual, and provides smooth driving experience.
In conclusion, I believe that science can help improve some areas of medical treatment for humans to save valuable lives, and researchers must also focus on the technology advancements to provide ease for humans.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position and providing two main supporting arguments: medical advancements and technological convenience. The ideas are relevant, though the development is somewhat superficial. For instance, the discussion on cancer could be more specific regarding how science improves lives beyond just 'initial stage' identification. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand on your examples with more depth, perhaps by discussing the broader societal impact of these scientific advancements rather than focusing solely on individual convenience or specific medical procedures.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. There is a logical progression from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'For example', and 'In conclusion' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing within sentences could be smoother. For example, the phrase 'if they are not identified at initial stage' lacks a clear subject connection to the previous clause. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer to their antecedents would enhance the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'pertinent treatment', 'incentives', and 'technological advancements'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'proper treatment has not identified' (should be passive: 'has not been identified') and 'perform all the operations manual' (should be 'manually'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and parts of speech. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated collocations would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'There is still need' (missing article: 'a need'), 'solution for those treatment' (number agreement: 'solutions for those treatments'), and 'drive their cars by themself' (should be 'themselves'). Additionally, some sentence constructions are slightly awkward, such as 'if they are not identified at initial stage'. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with grammatical precision.
