Student answer (Band 7.5)
It is widely contended that the paramount objective of science is to enhance the well-being of individuals. I wholeheartedly support this notion and maintain that scientific advancements are instrumental in improving people’s standard of living.
Primarily, I am of the opinion that scientific breakthroughs contribute significantly to the enhancement of societal well-being. In contemporary times, technology plays a crucial role in shaping our environment. It aids in streamlining our tasks and alleviating the burden of our daily responsibilities, especially when we are preoccupied with various commitments. Modern conveniences such as washing machines, vacuum cleaners, and robotic cleaners have revolutionized household chores, making them less laborious and time-consuming. For instance, in the past, individuals had to engage in strenuous manual labor to maintain cleanliness in their homes, whereas today, these tasks can be efficiently and swiftly accomplished with the help of technology. Consequently, such innovations have substantially improved the efficiency and simplicity of our everyday tasks.
Moreover, researchers and scientists in the field of healthcare continually work towards the development of new treatments, leading to the eradication of diseases that once plagued societies. The introduction of novel medical interventions has resulted in prolonged life expectancy and improved health outcomes for individuals. For example, patients can now undergo treatment in hospitals and receive diagnoses in a fraction of the time compared to previous eras. Consequently, the evolution of medical science has not only extended human lifespan but has also enhanced the quality of healthcare services, ensuring prompt and effective treatment for a variety of ailments.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that scientific progress plays a pivotal role in not only enhancing individuals’ quality of life but also in fostering convenience and comfort in our daily routines. By prioritizing advancements that directly benefit human well-being, science can continue to make significant contributions to societal progress and prosperity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. You have identified the core of the argument—that science should prioritize human well-being—and supported this with relevant examples, such as household technology and medical advancements. The ideas are well-developed, though the essay could be strengthened by briefly acknowledging the counter-argument (e.g., the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake or potential ethical dilemmas) to provide a more nuanced 'extent' of agreement. However, the current focus is logical and directly answers the question posed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two distinct body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a clear central topic sentence. Cohesive devices such as 'Primarily,' 'Moreover,' 'For instance,' and 'Consequently' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the structure of an academic essay. The flow is natural, and there is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive linking.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic context. Phrases like 'paramount objective,' 'instrumental in improving,' 'eradication of diseases,' and 'pivotal role' show a strong command of language. The word choices are precise and contribute to a formal tone. There are no significant spelling or collocation errors. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated, less common idiomatic or academic collocations, but the current range is sufficient for clear and precise communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The grammar is highly accurate, with a wide range of complex sentence structures used correctly. You effectively use subordinate clauses (e.g., 'especially when we are preoccupied with various commitments') and passive constructions ('can be efficiently and swiftly accomplished'). Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and there are no noticeable grammatical errors. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent. The writing is error-free, which reflects a high level of grammatical competence.
