Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether the main aim of science should be to improve people's lives, presenting arguments both for and against this view. A clear personal position is established in the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas suffers from a lack of clear explanation and overly simplistic or irrelevant examples. For instance, the mention of a 'discovery chanel' to explain how people learn about animals is underdeveloped and does not strongly connect to the core debate. Similarly, arguments regarding national defense and education are introduced but lack depth and precise supporting evidence. Consequently, the response fulfills the basic requirements of the task but remains at a Band 5 level due to limited and under-developed ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, showing an attempt at a standard essay structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, overall progression is limited by awkward transitions and confusing sentence sequencing. Cohesive devices are frequently misused, repetitive, or mechanically applied, such as the overuse of 'for instance' and 'another reason why'. Paragraphing is also erratic, with some sentences unhelpfully separated or lumped together. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the logical flow of arguments. These cohesion and organization flaws place the response firmly at a Band 5 level.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with frequent errors in word choice and collocation that occasionally impede communication. Examples include 'stander of lives' instead of 'standard of living', 'de to' instead of 'due to', and 'health faculty' instead of 'healthcare sector'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'counterarguments' and 'implication', but these are often marred by spelling and morphological errors, such as 'improvent' and 'knowing world'. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the general topic, the numerous inaccuracies in spelling and word formation restrict the score to a Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 based on descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The text displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex clauses. There are frequent errors in basic grammar, including subject-verb agreement ('science should be improve', 'this are not availble'), missing articles, and incorrect verb tenses ('before ten year a person made'). Punctuation and capitalization are also problematic, with lower-case letters used for the pronoun 'i' and at the beginnings of sentences in several instances. These errors are frequent and often cause difficulty for the reader, aligning the grammar with the Band 4 descriptors.
