IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Over recent years, the improvement in people’s lives through science has become a hotly debated topic in society. This matter is particularly significant due to its impact on the standard of living, influencing both individuals and communities. While some people argue that science is used for other purposes, I firmly believe that its main purpose should be to improve human lives. In this essay, I will present the reasons supporting my viewpoint and address potential counterarguments.

Some people believe that the crucial aim of science is to improve knowledge and discover new things because scientific discoveries help us understand the world. For instance, about ten years ago, a person created a discovery channel, through which people could learn about animals and birds around the world. On this platform, teachers told us about the advantages and disadvantages of animals and explained more about their lives.

Although this viewpoint may seem valid to some extent, I believe it overlooks several key aspects. Another reason why people hold this belief is that science is used for the defence of a country. For instance, science can be used to develop stronger and more useful equipment for wars and national security. Nevertheless, these arguments are not entirely convincing when weighed against the broader implications.

One of the main reasons I support the idea that science should improve people’s lives is that it can improve healthcare facilities. This is evident from the development of stronger medicines and improvements in healthcare centres that meet people’s basic needs. For instance, many medicines are not available in our country and have to be produced or imported from other countries. With the help of these medicines, people can live a better and healthier life.

Another compelling reason why I believe science can make our education system better, as in Europe, is that it can improve teaching and learning strategies. In Pakistan, some people do not receive a good education because of weaknesses in the public-school system. Science should be used to improve our teaching and learning strategies. In this way, science can improve people’s lives and provide better facilities for people. Therefore, it is clear that my opinion is well-founded and supported by both evidence and reasoning.

In conclusion, I believe that improving people’s lives through science is more important than its other purposes, as the reasons and examples discussed above demonstrate.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether the main aim of science should be to improve human lives. The writer takes a clear position in the introduction and maintains it throughout the essay. Main ideas are presented, such as the role of science in healthcare and education, but some arguments feel slightly under-developed or rely on tangential examples, such as the mention of a discovery channel or a general discussion of defence. While the response covers the core task requirements well, the development of ideas could be extended with more depth and academic rigor to reach a higher band. Overall, it satisfies the requirements for a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct ideas, such as healthcare and education. However, logical progression is sometimes hampered by mechanical or repetitive cohesive devices, such as the frequent use of 'For instance' and 'Another reason'. Referencing is generally clear, but the transitions between paragraphs can feel a bit formulaic rather than naturally flowing. Despite these minor issues, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'hotly debated topic', 'broader implications', and 'healthcare facilities'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'a person created a discovery channel' rather than producing or founding a network. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication. The lexical control is sufficient for a Band 6.0 score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses ('While some people argue...', 'Although this viewpoint may seem valid...'). There are several errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly regarding article use and sentence phrasing, but these errors rarely impede communication. The majority of complex structures show adequate control, even if they occasionally lack the precision seen at higher bands. The grammatical control fits comfortably within the Band 6.0 criteria.
