Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether the main aim of science should be to improve people's lives and largely agrees with the statement. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the writer mentions various fields of science such as 'Medical', 'Engineering', and 'space technology', and touches upon the coronavirus pandemic and the digital world, but these points are not fully extended with deep analysis. The position is clear throughout the essay, and the inclusion of examples like vaccine distribution and online shopping demonstrates an understanding of the task. Nevertheless, because the ideas remain somewhat general and lack detailed elaboration, the response aligns best with the Band 5 descriptors, where ideas are limited and under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay displays some organizational structure with a clear introduction and conclusion, but overall progression is hindered by choppy paragraphing and weak transitional links. Paragraphs are very short, often consisting of just two or three sentences, which disrupts the flow of ideas. For example, the second paragraph abruptly jumps from listing scientific fields to historical divisions ('In history science includes every field but when the time is passed...'). Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or awkward, as seen in phrases like 'Nowdays, everything is just a click away grom us'. While there is an attempt to group related concepts together, the lack of smooth transitions and effective referencing places this performance firmly at Band 5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses a limited vocabulary range that is minimally adequate for the task. There are numerous spelling, word-choice, and collocation errors throughout the response, such as 'fullfill it's aim', 'Engeneering', 'grom us', 'globl village', 'espect', and 'crona virus'. While the writer attempts less common vocabulary like 'global village' and 'space technology', the high frequency of lexical and orthographic inaccuracies causes some difficulty for the reader and prevents the response from achieving a higher band. These persistent errors in basic spelling and word formation are characteristic of Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent errors in verb tense, subject-verb agreement, and punctuation. Examples include 'Billions of dollars has been invested', 'when the time is passed the science is divided', and 'a lot of things are change now if we compare this world to the 100 yes5s old world'. The frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing cause strain for the reader and occasionally obscure the intended meaning. Because attempts at complex structures are often faulty and errors are recurrent, the performance corresponds to Band 5.
