Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student addresses the prompt by stating a clear position that science's major goal is the enhancement of human life, and touches upon whether other living organisms should be put in danger. Ideas are presented, such as the benefits of science in education, medicine, and technology, along with a counter-argument regarding laziness and reliance on technology. However, the development of these ideas is often limited and somewhat superficial. For instance, the transition into animal welfare in the third paragraph is abrupt and lacks robust elaboration. The conclusion summarises the main stance, aligning with Band 6 descriptors where all parts are addressed though some parts, particularly the nuances of the prompt regarding the extent of agreement, are under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into four paragraphs, showing an attempt at a conventional essay structure with introductory and concluding remarks. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and disjointed sentences. Cohesive devices are often used mechanically or inaccurately, such as "To commence with, advancement in the science become increasingly day-by-day" and "As consequently, people beccomes more dependent on thee technologies". Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs is weak, with abrupt shifts between ideas, such as moving from the benefits of technology straight to human selfishness and then to animal experiments. Referencing is sometimes unclear, fitting the Band 5 descriptors due to inadequate and repetitive cohesive devices.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words and topics related to science, education, and construction. However, there are numerous lexical errors, word choice inaccuracies, and spelling mistakes throughout the text. Examples include "indespensible" instead of indispensable, "enhancement" used awkwardly after 'goal is to', "arospace" instead of aerospace, "leeds" instead of leads, and "suffuring" instead of suffering. While the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the general meaning, the high frequency of spelling and collocation errors places this writing firmly within the Band 5 descriptor category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, incorrect article usage, and punctuation issues that recur throughout the essay. Notable examples include "Science is the indespensible part of the life" (missing/unnecessary articles), "other living organism should not put in danger" (passive voice error), "advancement in the science become increasingly day-by-day" (tense and adjective/adverb confusion), and "all the science that is carried out... it always for the human" (incomplete and ungrammatical clause structures). These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the text from reaching a higher band, making Band 5 the most accurate descriptor.
