Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The candidate addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position agreeing that the primary aim of science should be to improve people's lives. Main ideas are introduced, such as technological advancements in communication and career opportunities, alongside a counter-argument regarding weapons. However, the development of these ideas is limited and somewhat superficial. For instance, the transition to the discussion of weapons and warfare is abrupt and lacks deeper extension. While all parts of the task are addressed, the support remains basic and over-generalized in places, corresponding well to the Band 6 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay displays a basic overall arrangement with paragraphing used to separate the introduction, body points, and conclusion. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions, such as 'now we discuss with more information' and 'furthermore, not only that but also'. Cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or inaccurate, and referencing is occasionally unclear (e.g., 'they should improve people's lives' at the end without a clear antecedent). These features reflect the characteristics of Band 5, where organisation is present but progression is not always clear and cohesion is faulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate to convey the basic message, featuring common terms related to science, technology, and communication. However, there are noticeable limitations and spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'knowladge', 'compuuters', and 'backthen'. The candidate attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'philosophies' and 'hydrogen bombs', but imprecise word choices and collocations persist (e.g., 'commute with other people from letters' instead of communicate). These errors occasionally cause slight hesitation for the reader, fitting the Band 5 descriptor profile.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation issues, such as missing capitalisation, incorrect tense usage ('that it change considerably'), and fragments or run-on sentences ('It can destroy whole island within one second'). While the meaning is usually retrievable, the frequency of errors in complex structures pulls the score to this level, matching the Band 5 criteria where frequent errors occur and attempts at complex structures are often faulty.
