IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It has been observed that science has play a crucial role in shaping the modern society. Some people believe that the primary objective of science should be for the betterment of people's life. I agree the given statement to a large extent. My inclination is further elaborated in the upcoming paragraphs.

The foremost argument to justify my stand is that many scientific discoveries will directly address serious human problems such as building dams on water falls to generate electricity from them, discoveries of antibiotics and vaccines etc. For instance, the discovery of Uranuim and Cobalt minerals which are very important and used for the treatment of many diseases such as cancer. Vaccines are also very important and act as a shield against many viruses and bacterias. In COVID science had discover the vaccine, that saves millions life against corona virus.

Furthermore, scientific development can improve people's quality of life. Modern techonologies such as wirelss communication systems, social media platforms such as instagram, whatsapp and youtube have changed the communication system and allow people to communicate with their family members around the world while sitting at their own homes. Moreover, scientific research had contributed to safer buildings, better agricultural methods and effective water treatment systems.

However, some scientific researches does not give instant results, but they are crucial. Such as the researches in the field of astronomy and space. They give knowledge about this world and solar system. In addition to this, they give information about many other things like how the earth came into existence and the astronomy of stars and other planets.

To conclude this discussion, it can be said that despite the fact of its slow progress in the field of astronomy, my points that how science will change the quality of people's life by providing modern communication systems and modern techonolgies in the field of mdicines are logically acceptable.

Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, guiding the reader smoothly through the writer's line of thought.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'crucial role', 'betterment', 'antibiotics', and 'wireless communication systems'. However, there are notable lexical errors and inappropriate word choices throughout the text, such as 'techonolgies', 'wirelss', 'bacterias' (incorrect plural form), 'Uranuim' (spelling), and 'mdicines'. Some phrases are also slightly unnatural, such as 'science had discover the vaccine'. These vocabulary errors and spelling slips indicate a Band 6 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that detract from accuracy, such as tense and agreement issues in 'science has play' instead of 'played', 'some scientific researches does not' instead of 'do not', and 'points that how science will change' instead of 'points about how'.
