IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Scientific research has transformed almost every aspect of human life, from healthcare and communication to transportation and technology. I strongly agree that improving people’s lives should be the foremost aim of science, although scientific research can also have other valuable purposes.

One of the main reasons sceine should focus on improving human life is its ability to solve serious problems. Medical research, for example, has led to vaccines, effective treatments and advanced surgical procedures that have increased life expectancy and reduced suffering. Similarly, scientific developments in technology have made communication faster and more accessible, while innovations in agriculture have helped improve food production. These examples demonstrate that science can directly contribute to people’s health, safety and quality of life.

However, not all scientific research has an immediate practical benefit. Scientists also study subjects such as space, the origins of the universe and animal behaviour simply to expand human knowledge. Although such research may not solve an existing problem, it can lead to unexpected discoveries and future innovations. For instance, research that initially appears purely theoretical may eventually contribute to new technologies or methods that benefit society.

Studying about animals and other factors in some way can aslo help in improving life. For example, studies about climate can help predict weather that can help in making or arranging daily life tasks wothout having to face unexpected natural issues, same with animal studies, if someone owns a pet and that pet ends up facing some health issues the science can help figure out what the problem exactly is.

In conclusion, I believe that improving people’s lives should be the most important objective of science because scientific progress has the greatest impact when it addresses human needs and problems. Nevertheless, scientific research aimed at increasing knowledge should also be encouraged, as its benefits may become apparent only in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively addresses all parts of the prompt, establishing a clear and well-developed position throughout. You successfully agree with the statement that science should primarily aim to improve lives while acknowledging the secondary value of pure research. Your ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as medical research, agricultural innovations, and theoretical astronomy. Paragraph 4 feels slightly repetitive when discussing animals and climate after the broader points made in paragraph 3, but this does not detract from your overall engagement with the task. You present a coherent argument that directly tackles the extent to which we should prioritize practical applications of science.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from introduction to practical benefits, theoretical research, additional examples, and a well-synthesized conclusion. You use cohesive devices appropriately, such as 'For example,' 'Similarly,' and 'Nevertheless,' which help guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately. While referencing is generally clear, a minor spelling error in paragraph 2 ('sceine') and occasional minor structural awkwardness slightly impact the flow, but the overall arrangement remains coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for flexibility and precision, successfully using terms such as 'transformed,' 'foremost aim,' 'life expectancy,' and 'theoretical.' There is an attempt to use less common items with an awareness of style and collocation, which works well in most instances. However, there are a few spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'sceine' instead of 'science,' 'aslo' instead of 'also,' and 'wothout' instead of 'without,' alongside minor awkward phrasing like 'Studying about animals and other factors in some way can aslo help.' These occasional slips prevent a higher score, but your vocabulary remains adequate and generally conveys your ideas clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional-like structures effectively (e.g., 'if someone owns a pet and that pet ends up facing some health issues...'). There are frequent error-free sentences, particularly in the introduction and conclusion. However, a few grammatical and mechanical errors persist, including spelling slips ('sceine', 'aslo', 'wothout'), missing articles, and slightly run-on structures in the fourth paragraph. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and your control over complex sentence patterns is sufficient for a solid band 6.5.
