Student answer (Band 5.0)

Some people believe that science play a important role to improve people's lives. I strongly agree with this idea because scientific research improve people health and make every task easier.

First of all, one of the main purpose of science should be to protect human health and provide better facilities. In old days when there were not enough scientific discoveries, doctor had faced difficult times to cure the disease. But now a days people who are suffereing from various disease treated with advanced techniques at an early stage. For example, a patient who has cancer, might detect at an early or first stage with the help of different tests, surgeries with advanced instruments, CT scan, and MRI.

Modern technologies not only limited to health improvement. Also, it includes many other technologies which makes our life easier such as smart phones, internet, and tv. For example, people can communicate through video calls, audio calls, and messages from any part of the world in anytime. One reason is that when there is no mobile phones, it takes months to deilver a message, but when this technology is introduced people's lives are much in ease. Another reason is that, older people watch tv when they are bored and feel lonely it can improve their mental health.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that science should aim to improve people's lives through health and technology. However, the length requirement has not been met, as the response contains only 215 words, falling short of the 250-word minimum. Furthermore, the conclusion is incomplete, abruptly cutting off after 'To conclude,'. While the main ideas—protecting health and providing everyday conveniences—are relevant and supported by examples such as cancer detection and smartphones, their development is limited due to the truncated length and lack of elaboration. Because the task is under-length and lacks a proper conclusion, the ideas cannot be fully developed to higher bands, aligning the response with a Band 5.0 for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay displays some organizational structure with distinct paragraph divisions for the introduction, health argument, and technology argument. However, the progression is disrupted by the incomplete conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'First of all,' 'For example,' and 'Another reason is that,' but they can feel somewhat mechanical or repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, but paragraphing is undermined by the failure to finish the concluding paragraph. Overall arrangement shows a basic attempt at staging ideas, but the structural flaws place this criterion at Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday ideas related to science, technology, and health. There are several noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'science play a important role' instead of 'plays an important role', 'doctor had faced' instead of 'doctors faced', and 'people who are suffereing from various disease treated' which contains spelling and grammatical omissions. Less common vocabulary items are attempted, such as 'scientific discoveries' and 'advanced techniques', but inaccuracies in form and spelling ('suffereing', 'deilver') cause some difficulty, justifying a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional or relative clauses ('people who are suffereing...'). However, grammatical accuracy is weak, featuring frequent errors such as subject-verb agreement issues ('science play', 'research improve'), missing articles ('detect at an early or first stage'), and tense inconsistencies ('doctor had faced'). Punctuation is also problematic in places, and the frequency of errors can occasionally impede the reader's understanding. These persistent grammatical flaws reflect the descriptors for Band 5.0.
