Student answer (Band 6.0)

It has been observed that Scientific advancements have shaped human society throughout history. Although some people believe that the ultimate objective of scientific research should focus on enhancing human well-being, I agree with the given statement to a large extent. My inclination is elaborated in ensuing paragraph and relevant examples.

The foremost argument to justify my stand is that scientific efforts in making directly saves lives and prevents human suffering. Developing new vaccines and treatments drastically lowers the health and disease risks. For instance, creation of Covid vaccine stopped the spread of Covid 19. Besides this, it is also true that agricultural innovations ensure food security for growing population. High yield crops and sustainable farming practices effectively prevent widespread famine in developing regions.

On the contrary there are some people who counter claim the mentioned support, because The foremost argument they do is that basic scientific research aims only to understand the universe rather than to directly help people in need. To add to this furthermore exploring space or studying theoretical physics focuses on gaining new knowledge regularly, even if it does not solve everyday problems of humans right away.

To conclude the discussion, it can be said that despite the fact of pure theoretical research and space exploration, my reasons that medical advancements and agricultural innovations directly uplift standard of living are logically acceptable. Therefore science must always prioritise human well being as it’s true value lies in making the world a healthier, safer and a better place for future generations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear position and discussing both sides of the issue. The writer expresses agreement that science should aim to improve human lives, supporting this with relevant examples such as the Covid-19 vaccine and agricultural innovations. The counter-argument regarding pure theoretical research and space exploration is also acknowledged and discussed in the third paragraph. Ideas are generally well-supported and extended, although the development of the counter-argument could have been slightly more elaborated to achieve a higher band. Overall, the prompt is fully addressed with a consistent position throughout, satisfying the requirements for Band 6.5 to Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are structured into distinct paragraphs with an introduction, supporting body paragraphs, a counter-argument paragraph, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'The foremost argument', 'Besides this', and 'On the contrary' are used to guide the reader. However, some cohesive referencing is slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'The foremost argument they do is that...', and paragraphing transitions occasionally feel abrupt. Despite these minor limitations, the overall arrangement is coherent and demonstrates a clear progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'agricultural innovations', 'sustainable farming practices', and 'theoretical physics'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as 'scientific efforts in making directly saves lives' and 'counter claim the mentioned support'. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, but the imprecise lexical choices prevent the response from reaching a higher band level, fitting comfortably within Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. Examples of complex structures include concessive clauses ('Although some people believe that...') and relative clauses. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing patterns throughout the essay, such as 'scientific efforts in making directly saves lives' (grammatical mismatch), 'It’s true value lies' (incorrect use of the apostrophe with possessive pronoun), and capitalization errors like 'Covid 19'. These errors do not impede overall communication, but their frequency prevents a higher score.
