Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position agreeing with the statement that science should aim to improve people's lives. The student develops relevant ideas by discussing medical advancements, transportation, and touching upon the negative use of science in warfare and environmental protection. However, the development is somewhat generalized and lacks specific examples or well-extended arguments. For instance, points regarding medical and technological advancements are listed rather than fully explored. While all parts of the prompt are addressed, the depth of extension places this response comfortably at Band 6.0 according to the task response descriptors, as it presents a relevant position with some under-developed ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, including an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the progression is hindered by frequent punctuation errors, missing capitalization, and a lack of cohesive devices. Sentences frequently run into one another without proper punctuation, making the logical relationships between ideas mechanical or unclear at times. For example, 'To begin with, science help the human civilization and protect from the fatal diseases' lacks smooth transitions, and referencing is occasionally weak. This level of cohesion and paragraphing aligns best with Band 5.0, as there is an organizational structure, but cohesive devices and punctuation are inadequate and inaccurate.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'civilization', 'advancement', 'transportation', and 'sustainable'. However, there are numerous noticeable errors in word formation, spelling, and word choice, such as 'Nowdays' instead of 'Nowadays', 'alot' instead of 'a lot', 'countiously' instead of 'continuously', and 'destructiuon'. These lexical errors and awkward collocations cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a limited ability to control less common vocabulary. Consequently, the lexical resource is characteristic of Band 5.0, where vocabulary is minimally adequate but marred by frequent spelling and word-choice errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but the grammar is heavily compromised by frequent errors. There are widespread punctuation errors, missing capital letters at the beginning of sentences and for proper nouns, and basic subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'science help' instead of 'science helps' and 'surgery and operations which easily available'. Many complex sentence attempts are faulty or run-on sentences. These frequent errors cause strain for the reader and prevent the text from reaching a higher band. The overall grammatical control and frequency of errors firmly place this performance at Band 5.0.
