Student answer (Band 6.0)

The most essential objective of science should be to enhance people's lives. In my opinion, I agree that science should aim at making people's life better. However, I also believe that making life easier is equally important.

Life is so delicate that it should be cherished. There is this english adage, that says that life is the most important thing in life. Science being the tool for creativity should be focused on protecting the most valuable aspect of life. Also, the use of life supporting machine was only possible due to science. People now live longer though not stronger but are able to say their goodbyes to their families and indirectly helping them grieve better. For example there is a programme in China called "Expo 9" which trains both young and old scientist to device a means to enhance life and so far, it has been enhancing their life span.

Science being the crown of technology has proven to lessen the burden of humans, thereby making their lives easier. The time taken to complete a task is reduced and can be reduced further if really taken serious. Not only does science make life easier, it indirectly boosts the country's economy due to reduction of man power and minimization of cost. The invention of robotics in United States is an instance of how science and technology has made the lives of the citizens better. The country has been said to be the most developed and when looked at globally is the richest country because they have fully initiated the use of artificial intelligence.

In conclusion, with the help of science life is prolonged and things will get easier for people and for the economy of the state.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student addresses the prompt by discussing whether science should aim to improve people's lives and presenting a clear position that aligns with enhancing and making life easier. The main ideas are somewhat developed, such as the mention of life-supporting machines and robotics in the United States, although some arguments remain general or slightly repetitive. For instance, the distinction between improving lives and making life easier is somewhat blurred because both essentially point to the same overall benefit. Furthermore, the Chinese programme example lacks precise details. Nonetheless, the task is addressed with a consistent position throughout, placing this response firmly in the band 6 category for task achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'Also' and 'For example'. Referencing can also be imprecise at times, such as 'that says that life is the most important thing in life'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct ideas—one focusing on preserving life and health, and the other on reducing burdens and boosting the economy. Progression is generally logical, leading to a fitting, albeit brief, summary at the end. This fits the requirements for a band 6.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The writer attempts an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, incorporating terms such as 'essential objective', 'delicate', 'artificial intelligence', and 'economy'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation issues throughout the text. For example, writing 'though not stronger' is awkward, and 'device a means' contains a spelling error for 'devise'. Other phrasing like 'taken serious' instead of 'taken seriously' and 'reduction of man power' show limited precision with less common lexical items. Despite these slips, the vocabulary is adequate to communicate the writer's core meaning, meriting a band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some command over sentence construction with structures like 'Not only does science make life easier, it indirectly boosts...' and conditional or relative clauses. However, there are persistent grammatical errors and punctuation lapses, such as missing articles ('an english adage', 'the United States'), missing prepositions, and agreement issues. For example, 'scientist to device' should be 'scientists to devise'. Punctuation is occasionally neglected around introductory clauses. These errors do not impede overall communication, but they occur with enough frequency to prevent the essay from reaching a band 7.
