Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position agreeing with the prompt that the main aim of science should be to improve people's lives. The writer supports this view with relevant ideas, such as advancements in medical science (e.g., chemotherapy and organ transplants) and the integration of artificial intelligence in the corporate world. While the ideas are relevant, some points are slightly repetitive or lack deeper extension, tending towards listing examples rather than fully exploring their implications. Nevertheless, the position remains clear throughout, and the main arguments are well-supported with logical examples from everyday knowledge. This performance aligns comfortably with the criteria for Band 6.5, reflecting a well-developed attempt that addresses the task effectively despite minor areas of under-development.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay presents a generally coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression of ideas from the introduction through the body paragraphs and into the conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct themes, moving from medical science to artificial intelligence, and finally addressing a counter-argument. However, the cohesion feels somewhat mechanical at times, with repetitive transitional phrases like 'In the first place' and 'In addition to the previous point'. Referencing and linking could be smoother, and punctuation around punctuation marks (such as missing spaces after commas and periods) occasionally disrupts the flow of text. Overall, the logical organisation meets the standards for Band 6.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'chemotherapy', 'financial management', and 'brainstorming'. However, there are notable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'humans do liver and kidney transplant' instead of 'transplants', and awkward phrasing like 'adds creatives for hiring'. Additionally, spelling and word-formation errors occur, including 'humam's' and 'intellegence'. While these lexical slips and limitations do not impede communication, they prevent the score from reaching a higher band. The vocabulary is minimally sufficient to convey the intended meaning, matching the requirements of Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional clauses and relative relationships. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are numerous errors in punctuation and articles, such as missing spaces, capitalization issues (e.g., 'ai' instead of 'AI'), and subject-verb agreement errors like 'some people argued' where present tense is expected, or missing plural markers ('cancer like diseases had no available treatment'). Although the meaning remains understandable and the errors rarely impede communication, the frequency of basic mechanical and grammatical slips places this response firmly at Band 5.5.
