IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The benefits of scientific technologies should be utilized to improve the living of people. I totally agree with this statement because i believe that science was invented for this particular purpose at the first place.
Since the start of humanity, humans are trying to make their lives more easier. Hence for this purpose, science came into being and became a part of our everyday life. Conveniently the main purpose of modern sciences should focus on solving problems and creating convenience for people. Furthermore, there have been many inventions using scientific technologies for the mankind but there are still numerous diseases that have no cure. Other than that, by the growing rate of population science should be used to find ways to make more food for the future use. Humans can find answers if they don't get distracted from their goal. I believe that the energy or facilities of human beings should not be spent on the researches that are not gonna help the mankind in the future.
The people who would disagree with this statement might say that there have already been many discoveries and inventions for the convenience of people and we should find answers to other questions also like space, ocean, other species etc with the help of science. They might argue that we have been sent to this world to explore and find answers and the facilities should be spent on these things now. But i think that this would be rather useless in the future when there will not be enough food, water or land for the people to survive.
In conclusion, i highly believe that the main purpose of scientific facilities and modern technologies should be to find ways to make human life more convenient rather than focusing on other inhumane discoveries.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear, consistent position throughout, strongly agreeing that science should focus on improving human lives. The ideas are extended and supported, such as mentioning the need to cure diseases and produce more food for a growing population. The counterargument regarding space and ocean exploration is also addressed. However, some arguments tend to over-generalise or remain slightly under-developed, particularly when discussing complex global issues without specific examples. This aligns well with the requirements for Band 6.5 or a solid Band 6 performance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay has a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, moving logically from the introduction to supporting points, a counterargument, and a conclusion. However, cohesion at the sentence level is sometimes mechanical or faulty. For instance, transitional phrases like 'Hence for this purpose' and 'Other than that' feel repetitive and slightly unnatural. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun use in 'at the first place'. Paragraphs are adequately managed, but the transitional control keeps the score within the Band 6 category.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'technologies', 'convenience', and 'over-population' concepts. However, there are noticeable word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'living of people' instead of 'lives of people', 'more easier' instead of 'easier', and 'at the first place' instead of 'in the first place'. Additionally, 'inhumane discoveries' is an inappropriate collocation for scientific research that is purely exploratory rather than cruel. These errors indicate a Band 6 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as 'The people who would disagree with this statement might say that...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, including 'humans are trying' instead of 'humans have been trying', 'are not gonna help' (too informal), and punctuation slips like uncapitalised 'i'. While these errors do not impede communication, they restrict the grammar score to Band 6.
