The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Science played a vital role in the overall development of mankind. It is often argued that the focus of science should be on improving people's quality of life. I completely agree with this statement that the focus should be on people rather than unnecessary research.
To commence with, science should emphasize improving not only technology but also healthcare, so people can get benefited from this. Technological advancements can help people ease of their daily lives with better resources and amenities. For instance, artificial intelligence affects individuals' lives to a greater extent, as learning becomes convenient and individuals can learn different skills from AI such as Graphic Designing, Video Editing, and Website Development. Moreover, some people automate their businesses using technology. Similarly, improved health care can increase the life expectancy of the population. By finding treatments and vaccines for diseases such as HIV and Malaria, science can save lives of millions of individuals.
Furthermore, the amount of money and resources which are spent on irrelevant experiments such as weapons and nuclear bombs should be stopped, as these arms and bombs can lead to the destruction of mankind on earth. Nowadays, every country is spending signifcant amount of people's money on arms race. Despite knowing the detrimental effects of such findings, they are exploring further in this field. These resources and effort should be directed to make cost-effective fuel options from nuclear energy which directly affects the people's lives.
To sum up, science is the backbone of mankind. I believe science is a virtue and it's completely depends on us how we use it. However, I personally think the focus should be solely on improving people's lives rather than wasting resources on arms and bombs.

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position agreeing with the statement and extending arguments throughout the body paragraphs. In the second paragraph, the writer supports the view by discussing healthcare and technology, offering relevant examples such as artificial intelligence and treatments for diseases like HIV and Malaria. The third paragraph addresses the counter-perspective regarding the redirection of funds from irrelevant experiments, specifically nuclear weapons and arms races, toward cost-effective energy solutions. The main ideas are well supported and developed, maintaining a clear trajectory from introduction to conclusion, which firmly aligns with the Band 7 descriptor.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay displays a clear overall progression with a logical division of paragraphs. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from general agreement to technological and medical benefits, followed by the reallocation of resources in science, and finally a succinct conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Furthermore', and 'To sum up' are employed to guide the reader through the arguments. However, some referencing and linking could be smoother, such as the transition in the final paragraph where 'it's completely depends' introduces a slight mechanical feel. Overall, the organizational structure is easy to follow, satisfying the requirements for Band 7.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic response, including terms such as 'technological advancements', 'life expectancy', 'detrimental effects', and 'cost-effective'. There are attempts to incorporate less common lexical items, though occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation appear, such as 'can get benefited from this' instead of 'can benefit from this' and 'signifcant amount' containing a spelling error. Despite these minor lapses, the vocabulary is adequate to convey precise meaning without impeding communication, fitting comfortably into the Band 6 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional ideas effectively, such as 'By finding treatments and vaccines for diseases such as HIV and Malaria, science can save lives of millions of individuals.' However, there are notable grammatical inaccuracies throughout the text, including 'Science played a vital role' (should be present perfect 'has played'), 'people ease of their daily lives' (awkward phrasing), and 'it's completely depends' (incorrect verb form). While these errors do not impede overall communication, their frequency prevents the essay from reaching a higher band, making Band 6 an accurate reflection of grammatical control.
