IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
It is an ongoing debate whether science should improve people's lives or focus solely on new inventions. I firmly agree that science should work for the prosperity and development of mankind by providing people-friendly inventions.
To begin with, science plays an essential role in mankind's development. Today, people's lives are very advanced because of science and technology. In the past, people spent their lives in caves and forests. Then science appeared as a means of survival for mankind. Today, people have access to modern facilities that make their lives easier and safer. For example, medical science has developed effective treatments and medicines for many diseases, which have increased people's life expectancy. Similarly, modern technology has made communication and transportation much easier than they were in the past.
Moreover, science should not focus only on creating new inventions, but should also consider how these inventions can benefit ordinary people. Many scientific discoveries have become useful when they are applied to real-life problems. For instance, renewable energy technologies can help reduce pollution and provide cleaner sources of energy. In addition, modern agricultural technology can help farmers produce more food and reduce the effects of food shortages. Therefore, scientific progress should be connected with the needs of society.
On the other hand, some people believe that scientists should focus mainly on new inventions because scientific discoveries can lead to further development in the future. However, I believe that inventions are more valuable when they solve people's problems and improve their quality of life. Scientific progress should therefore be used responsibly for the benefit of mankind rather than simply for creating something new.
In conclusion, although new inventions are important for scientific development, I strongly believe that science should primarily be used to improve people's lives and contribute to the prosperity and development of mankind.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response clearly addresses the prompt by discussing whether the primary aim of science should be to improve people's lives. You adopt a clear position in the introduction, stating that science should work for the prosperity and development of mankind, and you maintain this stance consistently throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant and supported with appropriate examples, such as medical science increasing life expectancy, renewable energy reducing pollution, and agricultural technology helping farmers produce more food. While the arguments are well-developed, some points could be explored with even greater depth or nuance to reach the highest band. Nevertheless, all parts of the task are well covered, and your position is fully supported.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with an introduction that outlines your stance, followed by body paragraphs that explore the historical and practical benefits of science, a counterargument, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is managed appropriately, and referencing is clear throughout the text, ensuring that the relationships between your ideas remain easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary with good flexibility and precision. Words and phrases such as 'prosperity', 'life expectancy', 'renewable energy', and 'quality of life' are used appropriately. There are also attempts at less common lexical items with a general awareness of style and collocation. Spelling and word choice are generally accurate, and while there is some reliance on common vocabulary ('made communication and transportation much easier'), communication is never impeded. Minor refinements could elevate your lexical range further towards more sophisticated academic phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay features a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms. You successfully employ complex structures such as conditional and concessive clauses (e.g., 'although new inventions are important for scientific development, I strongly believe that...'). There is a high proportion of error-free sentences, and your control of grammar and punctuation is solid. While occasional minor inaccuracies or slightly repetitive sentence patterns appear, they do not impede communication in any way. The grammatical range is adequate for handling the academic task effectively.
