Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position agreeing that science should aim to improve people's lives. Main ideas are presented, such as advancements in medicine, agriculture, and space exploration. However, the development of these ideas tends to be limited and somewhat repetitive, relying on general statements rather than deep extension. For instance, the mention of the COVID-19 pandemic and vaccines is a relevant example, but its elaboration is brief. The conclusion simply restates the main premise without adding further insight. Because all parts of the task are addressed and a clear, consistent position is maintained throughout, this response meets the criteria for Band 5.5 to 6.0, settling comfortably at Band 6.0 due to the relevant examples provided.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance established in the introduction. Paragraphing is utilised, with distinct paragraphs for medical advancements and agricultural/space developments. However, cohesion within and between sentences is frequently faulty or mechanical. Expressions such as 'Before human faces lots of difficulties' and 'Despit all these' disrupt the smooth progression of ideas. Referencing and cohesive devices are sometimes inadequate or inaccurate, such as repetitive phrasing ('In the field of medical...', 'In the field of agriculture...'). Paragraph transitions could be managed more skilfully to enhance the logical flow. These issues place the response firmly in the Band 5.0 range.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, touching upon topics such as 'healthcare sector', 'vaccines', 'crop production', and 'colonize'. However, there are numerous word choice errors, morphological mistakes, and spelling inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'enhance' instead of 'enhance people's lives' used intransitively, 'machinaries', 'losting', 'develpoed', 'circuling' instead of crucial, and 'anying' instead of anything. These errors demonstrate a limited control over less common lexical items. Although the meaning can generally be followed, the noticeable errors and restricted vocabulary range prevent the response from achieving a higher band, making Band 5.0 an appropriate score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures ('If this happen we should thank to sciece'). However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, and preposition usage. Examples include 'scope of the science should be', 'human faces lots of difficulties', 'science have already made', and 'science have doing a lot'. Punctuation errors, such as inappropriate semi-colons or comma splices, also occur. While simple sentences are generally understandable, attempts at more complex structures frequently result in errors that can cause some difficulty for the reader, aligning with the Band 5.0 descriptors.
