Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the prompt by discussing both sides of whether science should aim to improve people's lives, touching on agricultural and medical advancements as well as negative consequences like health issues and pollution. However, the ideas remain largely under-developed and lack clear supporting examples from personal knowledge. Furthermore, the response falls slightly short of the required 250-word minimum, containing 248 words, which impacts task completion. The writer's position is somewhat discernible in the conclusion, but the overall lack of fully extended arguments and the minor length penalty restrict the score to a Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5
The essay is divided into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion, representing an attempt at paragraphing. However, the overall organisation lacks clear logical progression, and sentences often run together without proper punctuation. Cohesive devices are minimal, repetitive, or inaccurate, such as 'On one hand where' and 'The result of both persepactive'. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the train of thought smoothly. These structural and cohesive weaknesses place the response firmly at Band 4.5.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with frequent spelling errors such as 'decover', 'affort', 'wheet', 'suger', 'diabilties', 'colestorel', and 'persepactive'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary related to science and health, such as 'medical industry', 'fertilizer', and 'pollution', but these attempts are marred by inaccurate word choice and collocation. The limited range and recurrent errors constrain the lexical score to Band 4.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
Grammatically, the response demonstrates a very limited range of structures. Most sentences consist of long, convoluted strings of clauses connected by conjunctions like 'where' and 'and', lacking proper punctuation and boundary markers. Frequent errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and word forms—such as 'the life become easy' and 'disease are common'—cause considerable difficulty for the reader and obscure the meaning at times. Consequently, the grammar reflects a Band 4.5 level.
