Student answer (Band 6.5)

Science has always been a powerful force changing people's lives and I completely agree with this statement that its most important aim should be to improve people's lives. Science has revolutionized the world, in the past, people lived in caves and gathered food through hunting but due to knowledge of science they have now created a vast network of cities.

First of all, science has improved human lives greatly through the medical advancements. For example, in the past diseases such as smallpox, cholera were deadly and a large number of people lost their lives due to these diseases but these diseases can be cured easily now due to advancements in the field of medical science. In the past, during childbirth in most cases mother or infant lost their lives and this was due to lack of knowledge and poor sanitary conditions. Infant mortality rates were high in past but now the delivery is carried out in hospitals. These hospitals provide better sanitary conditions and take good care of children. As a result, death rate has declined significantly.

Additionally, due to the advancements in technology lives of humans have become easier. For example, in past messages were sent in the form of letters which took days to reach and are sometimes lost. Conversely, in present with the development of mobile phones and internet people can communicate with each other easily and can even talk face to face through video calls. Moreover, scientific research in agriculture has enabled us to produce nutritious crops while protecting the environment.

In conclusion, the knowledge of science has transformed the whole world. By focusing on advancements in technology, medicine and agriculture, science has greatly improved human lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task well, presenting a clear position throughout that completely agrees with the statement. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as medical advancements in curing diseases like smallpox and technological progress in communication. The introduction establishes a clear stance, and body paragraphs develop this position logically with historical contrasts. However, there is a minor tendency to over-generalise in parts, such as stating broadly that past mothers or infants lost their lives during childbirth. Overall, the ideas are well-developed and directly address the prompt, aligning closely with the criteria for Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently linked, starting with an introduction, moving to well-defined body paragraphs focusing on medicine and technology, and concluding with a summary. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'For example', 'Conversely', and 'In conclusion' are used to connect ideas, though some transitional phrasing feels slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating distinct arguments effectively. Referencing is generally clear, contributing to an overall smooth reading experience that merits a Band 7 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, employing less common items such as 'revolutionized', 'infant mortality rates', and 'agricultural'. There is good awareness of topic-specific vocabulary related to science, medicine, and technology. However, there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'knowledge of science' rather than 'scientific knowledge', and minor grammatical friction with lexical choices like 'took days to reach and are sometimes lost' (tense inconsistency). Spelling is generally accurate, and communication is never impeded. These characteristics place the lexical resource firmly at Band 6.5, rounded to 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures reasonably well. There are frequent error-free sentences, particularly when discussing historical versus modern contrasts. However, some errors persist, such as missing articles ('in past' instead of 'in the past'), tense shifts ('took days to reach and are sometimes lost'), and punctuation issues around introductory phrases. Despite these recurring minor errors, they rarely impede communication and the control of grammar is generally sound, supporting a Band 6.5 score.
