Student answer (Band 6.0)

Science has always been a powerful force changing people's lives and I completely agree with this statement that its most important aim should be to improve people's lives. Science has revolutionized the world, in the past, people lived in caves and gathered food through hunting but due to knowledge of science they have now created a vast network of cities.

First of all, science has improved human lives greatly through the medical advancements. For example, in the past diseases such as smallpox, cholera were deadly and a large number of people lost their lives due to these diseases but these diseases can be cured easily now due to advancements in the field of medical science. In the past, during childbirth in most cases mother or infant lost their lives and this was due to lack of knowledge and poor sanitary conditions. Infant mortality rates were high in past but now the delivery is carried out in hospitals. These hospitals provide better sanitary conditions and take good care of children. As a result, death rate has declined significantly.

Additionally, due to the advancements in technology lives of humans have become easier. For example, in past messages were sent in the form of letters which took days to reach and are sometimes lost. Conversely, in present with the development of mobile phones and internet people can communicate with each other easily and can even talk face to face through video calls. Moreover, scientific research in agriculture has enabled us to produce nutritious crops while protecting the environment.

In conclusion, the knowledge of science has transformed the whole world. By focusing on advancements in technology, medicine and agriculture, science has greatly improved human lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task well, presenting a clear position that completely agrees with the statement. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, particularly regarding medical advancements and technological improvements in communication and agriculture. For instance, the student contrasts historical struggles with smallpox and childbirth mortality with modern hospital care to support the argument. However, the development tends to rely heavily on generalisations rather than fully extended specific examples, which keeps the response within the Band 7 range. The position is maintained throughout, leading to a coherent and logical conclusion that ties the supporting paragraphs back to the central theme of improving human lives.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are presented in a coherent sequence, beginning with an introduction that states the writer's position, followed by well-defined body paragraphs focusing on medicine and technology, and a summary conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'For example', 'Conversely', and 'Additionally' are used effectively to guide the reader through the arguments, though some of the transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each body paragraph dedicated to a distinct thematic area of scientific improvement, ensuring clear overall progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating less common lexical items such as 'revolutionized', 'infant mortality rates', 'sanitary conditions', and 'agricultural'. There are occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'knowledge of science' instead of 'scientific knowledge' or 'take good care of children' rather than infants in the context of childbirth. Additionally, minor errors like 'took days to reach and are sometimes lost' (tense inconsistency) occur. Nevertheless, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning with reasonable precision and does not impede communication, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating the ability to construct multi-clause sentences using subordinating and coordinating conjunctions, such as 'Science has always been a powerful force changing people\'s lives and I completely agree...' There are some grammatical errors and punctuation issues present, including comma splices and missing articles, for example, 'in past messages were sent' and 'death rate has declined'. While these errors do occur, they are generally non-systematic and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the argument smoothly. The control over grammar is mostly solid, supporting a Band 6.5 rating, which rounds to a stable Band 6 or strong Band 6 performance.
