Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The student addresses the prompt by discussing whether the main aim of science should be to improve human lives, taking a clear stance that science should prioritize human welfare, environmental protection, and animal care. A position is presented throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive, with brief examples such as the mention of the coronavirus pandemic and agricultural measures. While the main aspects of the task are covered, some arguments lack full extension and deep explanation, keeping the response at a Band 6 level for Task Achievement. The ideas are relevant and directly respond to the prompt, but further elaboration on the counter-arguments and specific impacts of scientific research would be required to reach higher bands.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a discernible introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding sentence, though paragraphing boundaries are occasionally blurred (for example, spacing issues and missing capitalizations after periods). Cohesive devices are used, but they are sometimes mechanical or awkwardly placed, such as starting sentences abruptly or relying on simple transition words. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in the concluding sentence 'Having discuss the entire topic in detail. I can saftely reached to a verdict...'. Progression is evident, but logical flow between sentences is occasionally hindered by abrupt shifts in focus and structural disjointedness. Overall, the organizational framework meets the criteria for Band 5.5, which is rounded to 5.0 for stability under strict descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words and topic-related terminology such as 'welfare of mankind', 'antidote', and 'eco-friendly nature'. However, there are numerous lexical errors, incorrect word forms, and spelling mistakes throughout the text, including 'human's life' instead of 'human lives', 'enviroment' (environment), 'detect disease' (detect diseases), 'shoud' (should), 'saftely' (safely), and 'proritize' (prioritize). These errors do not completely impede communication because the overall meaning remains discernible, but they noticeably detract from the quality of the writing and place the response firmly in the Band 5 category for Lexical Resource.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex sentence forms, but grammatical control is weak. There are frequent errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and articles, such as 'science serve society', 'scientist find the antidote', 'research can took many years', 'scientist not only work', and 'there living style' instead of 'their living style'. Punctuation errors are also prominent, including missing spaces after full stops ('life. The', 'world .For'), missing commas, and sentence fragments or run-on structures. Because errors are frequent and can occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader despite a basic range of structures being present, a Band 5 score is appropriate.
